Default Tire Size - Tire Brand Recommendation for Cup 1 Wheels

Several years ago I bought a NOS set of 17" Cup 1 wheels for my car. I am now in need of a new set of tires, so it is time to swap in the new wheels with a new set of 17" tires. Anyone that is currently running Cup 1's on their car, I am interested in 1) the size of the tires you are running, 2) the brand and type, and 3) how you feel about the combo on your car?

Thanks

Nathan

Haven't got them yet, but will be putting on Continental Extreme Contact in 225/50 and 255/40. Wish I could get Michelin Pilot Sport 5S, but they don't make them in our size.

Back when I got my Cup IIs, someone on the other forum recommended 255/40-R17 and 225/45s. I just got a new set of Hankook Ventus V12 Evo 2’s. They’re summer only tires but IMO they’re way better tires than the price would indicate.

One thing I notice over the 16” sizes is they follow road seams a lot more. They also freak me out on occasion because the roadway crown often tricks me into thinking it’s pulling to the right.

I loved all the Contact series I ran on my Smart, and I almost went with the Extreme Contacts, too. But I had a road hazard boo-boo two years ago so I replaced the rear Evos with Evo 2s. So I would have had to replace all 4 rather than just getting a pair of fronts.

This is P's recommended tire size for Cup 2s on our cars. This is assuming that you have the 7.5 front wheels and not the 7.0 as was fitted to the front of the 911.

I've always ran the Porsche recommended sizes. My favorite tire ever for our type cars is the Michelin PSS, which is now the PS4S and I guess soon will be the PS5S. I get whichever of those was least expensive and available in recommended sizes. I guess eventually a better tire will be available. I'll probably never find out if they keep making this tire.

I use the recommended 968 tire sizes for 17" wheels. My first set were Firestone Indy 500's, nice touring tire. Not the best for track day or auto-cross.
Now I have the same Hankook's mentioned above on now. So far so good.

How do you use your car?? Daily driver? Track?? Cruising the back roads?

I Found the best time for my 968 is down the Bridgestone RE-11, now RE-71RS … sticks like glue, pretty good in the wet, better than a Michelin PS Cup 2 Connect.

You’re right Cliff. I just looked it up. It’s also what comes up in 17” on Tire Rack. I could have sworn when I bought the 17s, the recommend was 215/245.

Anyway, here’s Tire Rack’s sampling.

$800-something for the Conti vs $1100 for the summer Michelins vs $650 for the Hankooks. I used an older version of those BFG G-Force on my 911 and liked them, too. I know some people drive year round but I don’t, so I’m not really interested in AS tires. If I sell my 958 for a Boxster, I’m going to use the 18 G-Force, as the Hankooks aren’t available in the proper 18” size for a Boxster.

Unfortunately, Michelin doesn't make the 255/40R17 in PS4S or PS5S. Which is why I will be going with the Contis.

Hmm, I guess I'd drop down 5% on the height both front and read and still go with the PS4S. Or drop width if height didn't work.

Closest rear is 245/40R17.

That’s the width of that 10mm socket you can’t find.

I think it would be hard to notice if there’s a front correspondingly 10mm skinnier.

But I’m sure the Contis will be fine tires.

How about the Michelin Pilot Sport All season 4? They look to be available in our 17" sizes.

If the new Bridgestone RE-71RS tires are anything like their predecessors (going back to the RE 11) I would absolutely consider them. I’ve been running the RE 71 (and before that the RE-11) on my 94 cab and they stick like freaking glue. They are listed as available at tire rack for the recommended size for the 17 inch wheels, and they’re a bargain compared to Michelins … and arguably better than the Michelin cup2
