Availability of spares
Gents,
I currently own a 964, and have the oppertunity to buy a 968, lovely car, some problems exist, in particular the mileometer stopped working at less than 11,000 miles (a US import). I suspect that this excuse is rubbish it was probably broken while trying to be clocked. Anyway its a 92 coupe, the engine looks imaculate, some of the parts look brand new, ir oil & water caps, but the gear *** (manual) is very worn. Any advice??
I am looking for a project car so I want to do some work on it, I know that this a limited number of these were sold so it begs the question on parts availability?? (I live in Dubai), any advise.
I have driven it and ( coming from my 964) was not impressed by the pick up or the gear box, very rattly indeed, made the whole car shake when engaging a gear, the clutch seems fine, bakes great, mostly superficial attention needed. what do you reckon then??
BTW he wants about USD 7500 for it...???

The price is excellent if it runs. This is how I would look at it.
Even if you have to fix the tranny (the rattle is not normal), you will be adding another $1500-$2500 to the final price. All else working, the car is still very very cheap for $10K.
You did not mention how many miles they "claim".
I say, go for it. The performance has a bit to be desired on the engine side. The trans is known to be a bit on the notchy side, but aside from all this its still a wonderful car and very rare. It will turn heads and will give most cars a run for their money. You really need to wind them up to extract power out of them. They are not as willing to rev or as torquey as an E36 M3 but BMW makes the best engines, so that is to be expected . Also, the E36 has a nicer box but it is 5 speed. That is the only other car that I would consider its competition.

Parts are available from many US suppliers and from dealers.

The only stock 968 parts I am aware being in short supply are certain colors of carpeting for the interior.

There is a 968 owner who posts here and also lives in Dubai. He goes by "nedkelly". You should contact him and ask him about his experiences with getting parts in Dubai.

And here I am! First name Ned Last name Kelly! Parts are no problem here in Dubai whether it is through OPC (expensive) or through either of the 2 Porsche specialist workshops. Quarter Mile racing or House of Cars. Personally I use Quarter Mile Racing who have all sorts of exotica in their workshop especially high dollar Porsches. I recently had full service with all belts (timing & balance), hydraulic tensioner and roller bearings for 3000 Dirhams which is a bees dick over $800 U.S. Tony send me a PM if you need more info.
