Hello to all: just a heads up that if you start to notice a softer, longer clutch pedal start by checking the firewall that the brake booster is bolted to. I found a horizonal crack and conformed that this was real by using a helper to push in the clutch pedal while I used a flashlight in the brake booster area to light it up. Sure enough as soon as foot pressure is applied to the clutch pedal the fire wall crack opened up at least 1/16" to the left side of the brake booster. I will be having this welded along with a small metal backing plate to prevent a repeat.

There is somebody that made brake booster brackets for this.

I bought one when I owned my 968, it had the same issue you are talking about, but kept it until I got rid of my 951 recently. I never test fit it on my 968.

No affiliation, and apologies if this is already linked in the previous post: https://only944.com/partscatalog/only/firewallbrace/

I understand this happens often when the stouter 964 clutch plate is used instead of the hard to find duel material clutch.
Seems like a good idea even if no flex is found. Stiffer is always better!

Search and you should find a lot of discussion and information regarding this. It has long been a weak point for our cars and over the years, several have come up with different methods of attempting to prevent it and attempting to repair it after it occurs. Based on what I know, I will probably be installing the 944 only firewall reinforcement plate on my track car when the engine gets removed. Not looking forward to it, but needs to be done. As to welding the crack you have found, that will likely only send the stress to a different location in the firewall and it will crack there.

I don’t know about that - people seem to be having a good amount of success with welding the cracks and installing a firewall brace, as the OP is doing here.
There is a lot of force applied obv but if it’s transferred across that plate it seems to be disbursed enough to make it a non-issue.

Well it’s each person’s decision as to their repair attempt. Having been in the industry 52 years, I only report or post what I have seen and/or can prove. I know of one car that was welded several times and ended up with the firewall separating from the fender inner tub because again, welding the metal is reinforcing the metal and the stress is simply moved to the next weakest area. But each can do as they choose. My suggestions are always focused on longevity and not the quick fix or a patch. If a simple weld would suffice, it's my opinion that Only 944 would have had no reason to develop their plate. As to firewall bracing, which version are you referring to? Him adding the "backing plate" that he referred to?
