Default 968 tune up questions

Looking to do a tune up and wanted to see what the latest opinion is on parts. Specifically, ignition wires and spark plugs.

My car is a 94 968 with 64k miles. Had a few hard starts recently. Everything else is good. Recently did a timing belt and cam chain tensioner pad job. So feeling good about everything. Just figured these 25 year-old wires could use replacement.

My car is all factory, so are performance wires worthwhile or should I just stick to oem 7mm? Are the oem WR7Dtc plugs the way to go?

Going to install new distributor cap and rotor. Any reason to go genuine Porsche over Bosch?

Any thoughts on replacing the ignition coil? Not too expensive, so why not, right? Once again, any need for performance part, or better to stick with oem?

the 7mm wires will fit the holders better. beru or bremi leads are fine as the 2k ohm leads will unscrew from the wire. you might trim the ends a half an inch while waiting for parts to see if starting improves. The last set of triple electrode plugs I purchased where from aircooled.net.

inspect the hall pick-up plug to see if it has crumbled. it is kinda hot right there.

you can turn the key to 'on' and hold down the go pedal to read codes.

Good call on the diameter of the wires. Great reason to go with the 7mm.

I hadn't looked at my engine closely in a couple of months. My local shop did the chain tensioner pads for me (back in May), and I had them go ahead and replace the pertinent gaskets while they had the cylinder head cover off. Lo and behold, there's already some oil seepage onto the top of the cover. That's not right. Looks like it's coming from around the lead on cylinder 3. As for the hall plug, it has crumbled and is being held in place by a zip tie. Not sure if this happened during that previous work, but it would have been nice had they asked me if I wanted to replace that broken piece.
I've never had oil seepage here.

there is a paper gasket and an o-ring on the vario port for the solenoid cover. a little dab of hylomar will cure that issue.

Good to know it's not something more serious. Thanks for the tip!

I was just looking at the shop manual and see what you're talking about. Where does the dab go, between the o-ring and gasket (along the edge of the opening)?

The permatex equivalent of hylomar is part #85420. Your FLAPS will have it.

Never having to scrape gaskets is priceless. I mainly use it on intakes and hose fittings.

The vanity cover will be in the way but don't forget to route the cruise cable if you remove the vario name plate.

put a thin layer on both sides of the paper gasket and position it on the cam cover. pull the o-ring out and apply thin coat, reinstall the o-ring then torque to spec.

I want to make sure to purchase the right part. What has exactly crumbled on my hall sender? It's the piece that I've forgotten in red, correct?

yep. I would look for just the plug and de-pin it.

I saw on another forum where someone mentioned using a plug from a Jetta part. And then I saw this one. I wonder if this would work. It's a lot cheaper, a lot.

I have the same issue with the plug on my S2 and have put off replacing it as it seems like there is a good bit of disassembly that needs to happen to replace it. Is that true, or am I out to lunch?

I also looked at depinning it and just replacing the plug but it looks like it's molded in there; is there some invasive surgery required to do this?

Thanks

I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning the hylomar. I have the same issue and replaced the o-ring and gasket only to have it leak again. I created a thread and nobody knew the solution so thanks!

Any idea what the torque rating is Thomas?
