"Check Engine Light"
I got a provisional pass on my Ca Smog. They said my "Check Engine Light" was not working. Do we even have a "Check Engine Light" warning light in the dash?
I know many other warning lights. Please provide insight.
Thanks,

Yes, the 968 in the US market does have a Check Engine light in the dash. It should be listed in the owner manual.
You can read the codes by counting the blinks...

The guy at the smog test sight didn't know so he called a dealer. The dealer said he would have to research it and report back.
So if I got this right, the check engine light is there just not easily accessible? I think he was most worried that a bulb had burned out. Does Check Engine Light buld illuminate any other warning lights?
Thanks,

Like @931guru said, there is a CEL in the dash, but it's called the "Central Warning Light" on pg. 23 of that manual. That's what I'm referring to when I talk about the illuminated "!" in the cluster. That light is the only one that will illuminate under "CEL" conditions.

Post #8 here has a link to a Driver's Manual (best I could find, not a ton of info out there on the 968) that I think will apply to what you're looking to answer: https://rennlist.com/forums/944-and-...-s-manual.html

Definitely not the "Central Warning Light."

Found it.
Page 47 Warning Lights
Check Engine Light, says it will come on when the ignition is switched on. Then goes out after starting. However, there is no mention or diagram of it's location.
It says the the stored emissions Control System can be displayed. It just does not tell one how to do this. For further information of the codes and repair procedures, see your authorized Porsche dealer.
Boy that was informative,

Well I finally "found" it. In normal operation, the Check Engine Light, which is located on the lower right side of the instrument cluster, does come on for about 1-2 seconds when the car is started.
It is hard to see because it only stays on for a little bit, it is blocked from view by the steering wheel, and the warning light just above it is much larger.

Picture for anyone curious where exactly it is and what the display looks like. Picture is from an 86 951 with the right side module swapped with a unit out of a later model car and controlled via standalone engine management. Pin 6 on the lower right side dash connector labeled 3P needs grounded to turn the light on.
