Default Timing belt tensioner

Been away from board for longtime but was getting my 968 ready for the summer and my timing belt tensioner is leaking and soft. I’ve not been able to find one available at any of the usual sources, anyone have any suggestions on where to look? Maybe I need to come up with a way to refurbish these since they appear to NLA. Thanks!

That's interesting, I have part number 94410517203 for it, and when I do a quick search, it appears you are correct, there doesn't seem to be any available.

FCP Euro and Rose Passion both appear to have them in stock.

They are NLA in the world and are not being made anymore. Anyone online that says they have them in stock don't. If you figure out how to fix them up or make a new one that would be great for alot of people. The only other option is the mechanical tensioner from the s2.

I tried ordering the fcp one but it said spec order once in the cart. I’m going to pull this one here soon and dismantle it. I build a lot of ecotec Chevy engines for circle track racing and we machine the hydraulic one and make them manually adjustable. Granted it’s a chain set up but similar principles apply. The older 44-51 cars were manually adjusted as well. I will update as I go here.

That sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

I am surprised that the Classic Porsche parts program does not have this part. I think you can contact them and request that it is made.

I'll second, third, and fourth that I would love to see what you come up with. In 928 land, there's a product someone came up with to incorporate a more modern hydraulic tensioner for those engines, as opposed to the really basic mechanical pieces that were used for years. It required a custom bracket to be made but, given your experience on custom jobs, maybe it's right up your alley.

Anyway, I'm subscribing to this thread as I anticipate this is something my car will need.

Cheers

Lightning505: It appears that the S2 part number is 944 105 067 17.

Has anybody actually made this modification? Does it work? How much machining of the block is necessary? What extra parts are needed?

Looks like 944 Ecology is remanufacturing these now. Love to know what all is entailed in this and what they do to them.

I did this conversion to my supercharged 928 and it utilised a number of Audi tensioner parts however it was not hydraulic it was spring tension...I had to plug the oil feed journal to the original tensioner as part of the conversion. it did stop my belt from triggering the "slack" sensor which used to scare me every time I revved the 5.0L S4. There were quite a few of us that completed the conversion at the time.

@oz968 : I've now had the pleasure of meeting Ken in person, which makes me feel like a little bit of a fanboy. I didn't know the Audi part was a spring but I guess that makes sense. I have one on my S4 (it came with the car) and the concept seems solid. Once I get to know Ken better I plan to hit him up about helping design something for the 968, with my car as a test mule. The design is pretty straightforward, I think, it's some of the part strength calculations that Ken talked about with me that I'd need help with.

Cheers

i can definitely say it was a well thought out conversion which was to put it simply effective both price wise and result wise
Good choice to liaise with Ken
