Default Iris Blue '94 968 Resto - Large Pics

Thought I would start a thread documenting my progress for those that get a kick out of this sort of thing. Not sure of the best way to go about this so for now I'll just keep adding pictures. Be patient with me, I have a lot of pictures.

You can follow me @irisblueporsche968 on Instagram if you care to.

Picked up this 1994 Iris Blue 968 in September of 2020 with the intention of bringing it back to the condition it deserves. No timeline or budget, I'm hoping it will be done and on the road Spring 2022 but we shall see.

It's a pretty rough example that has had a hard life and quite a few owners. It leaked from pretty much every single gasket and o-ring and almost every rubber and plastic piece under the hood crumbled at touch. But hey, it has genuine Cup 1 wheels in the right sizes so that's a plus!

Anyway, here's the journey.

First day home with its countryman.

A 'few' leaks...

Some dodgy plumbing going on here.

Ah, I've been following you on Instagram! I have a 1992 Cobalt blue metallic, and have slowly been working through many various issues. Love Iris Blue, great color.

thanks! I’m having a blast doing this. Impatient but really excited to see it come together. Car is almost fully stripped now and will be starting body repairs (weld in new jack points etc) in the next week or so.

What all issues does the car have? Apart from looking a bit dirty in the engine compartment and the usual power steering leaks, doesn't seem from the pictures to have anything that looks that bad. Maybe once pandemic is over you could drop down to Iowa and teach me welding skills! Then I could use that to start in on restoring my 944....one Porsche is never enough.

Ha, once I figure out welding skills, I'll let you know! This is all new to me.

It should be a case study on 'while you are in there', once you take everything apart to reseal the engine, cam chain guides, hoses, belts, replace all the bushings, seals, suspension, bearings, gearbox, windshield etc, you may as well remove the two coats of paint and get it looking 100%...

What this car doesn't have is a ton of rust thankfully, but there was some hidden accident damage in the passenger footwell and front corner so that will be fixed.

hmm, thinking through your plans (which are very impressive), you might consider dry ice blasting to clean things up without harming what's underneath. Was car repainted in the past that you are aware of? If not, and there is a high-end detail shop, they might be able to do paint correction that would get it looking 100% without investing the multiple thousands of dollars needed for a truly good repaint.

oh yeah the car was painted in the past, poorly. I’ve already started taking it down to metal. I’m planning on painting it myself. I may as well commit to this 100% 😂

Nothing I can’t learn to do.

Nice project. It seems the attrition rate on Iris coupes is high so it is good to see yours getting saved. they only made 29 of them. Post the last 3 of your VIN and I can provide you the production details.

One thing for sure, those beautiful wheels are NOT original. Iris blue is a late color and Cup1s are an early wheel so someone added them. 17" cup2s would be correct for your car. the good news is that the Cup1s are worth a pretty penny and probably twice what the Cup2s are worth so if you want to be correct you can sell them and fund a set of correct Cup2s with new tires!

BTW, the back half of an Iris coupe is now hanging off of my Matador project

Hey Jeff,

Oh I know about the Matador (so impressed with your work), we had a back and forth about whether a Cobalt Blue 968 was Iris Blue on FB , maybe you won that.

Yeah the original wheels on this car were actually the 16s if the VIN is to be believed. It's actually close to your donor, Iris Blue on Marble/Black. Unfortunately the interior is pretty trashed so I will probably recover things in a different fabric but we shall see.

RS820729 was the Iris coupe that gave its rear end to the Matador. Also had the marble grey/black interior (1 of 5). A looker for sure.

Interesting, 28 of the Iris blue coupes were 94s. only 1 in 1995.
