Smile 968 Stereo Upgrade

Still a work in progress.. but been slowly upgrading the factory stereo. I'm trying to keep it as clean and stock looking as possible. If anyone's curious you can fit a JL VX1000/5i amp and a 1 Farad cap in the side cubby and make it look neat!

Car came with the 10 speaker setup, but the 3" midranges and tweeters were blown. Bought JL Audio C5 3 way's + a pair of 5-1/4" C5's. Installed the 6-1/2"'s in the rear and put the 5-1/4's in the door. Mine is the early style 93 with the 3" still in the grill, so I installed the 4" mid's out into the door where they should be. FYI: the 968 has the hole in the door just like the old 944's for the 4x6. Just have to cut a hole in the door liner for the upgrade. I was also able to make the much larger crossover fit in place of the factory one in the grills.

The box for the amp took quite some time given the shape of the space to work with. Designed it first out of cardboard then transferred to Luan underlayment. This was riveted together in the cubby after I ran all the wires. Top is made from 1/2" MDF with a 1/2" lexan inlay, I used a router to cut both so it installs flush. Still need to build a removable sub box for the spare tire well. I have it mapped out in CAD, but still finalizing some of the design. I'll update when I get around to finishing it up..

nice. I ponied up for the two way C5s for the doors but doing a tri-amp thing.

Fiddling with a Schiit Modi3 digital to analog converter to get Pandora though the usb and the optical output of the cdc-m1 to both work. (the Modi throughput is comparable to the Panasonic MASH converters but I see a Burr-Brown DAC in my future.)

Thanks! Still have a lot to do, but it's getting there. Sounds better even without the sub or the crossovers properly set.

Decided to go with that amp to keep it all in one place, multiple amps would've been challenging but I'm sure better and cleaner power to split it up.
Running a DAC to the amp is a great idea. I just went with a Pioneer flip out so I could get a screen but stay single DIN. Ran a usb extension from it with a mounting ring into the center console storage. Works great with iPhone to get carplay, and believe I should be able to plug in a little HD with music too.
