Default Cab boot cover question

I usually put my top up at night so the plastic window and the top itself don't get fold marks. In the morning down goes the top and on goes the boot cover. The manual says you should use the boot cover when the top is down. My question is the boot cover absolutely necessary when you're driving around town on side streets and not going more than say 40mph?

I often run without the boot cover on. It doesn't look as nice but it is easier. Never had any issues. 22 years of 968 cab ownership.

After owning 944S2 and 968 cabs for years (both have identical tops), I can say that running around town and for brief (not all day) stints on the highway with the top down and no boot cover on causes no apparent harm.

I never use the cover...too much of a hassle.
