Exclamation Anyone else have this sound from reverse to 1st

Anyone else experience this.

On my 93' 968 coupe, when I back out of the driveway in reverse come to a complete stop then put it in 1st I hear a "whirlling rolling sound" for 1-2 seconds then its gone.

It's not a grinding or syncro sound, but more electrical or mechanical sound just for a second or two.

Just wondering if anyone else has the same.

I have this sound, but it occurs whenever I start the car and drive (forward or back). I think it sounds pretty cool, like a jet pulling up its wheels after take-off... I'm happy as long as it doesnt start making any other types of jet noises!

Pinion gear on it's way south. Check for metalic flakes next time you change your trans fluid.

Guys, he has had enough maintenance already, lets not curse him with pinion bearing failure.

Joe, he sent that photo

along with these two

to host, so if its in an ad then he has a big admirer out there!

I've noticed that too. It almost sounds like some kind of pump or valve closing. Really hard to describe. And only when I back out of the garage and stop. You're absolutely right. I'm not concerned about it and my car just came back from a major tune up. It does sound pretty cool though.

Richard

Nice car, btw ban944s! Looks identical to mine.

Joe and Bruce,
The pic in my signature is from the Ad on Traderonline from the previous owner. I bought the car in Dec from the owner in LA. I'm up norther near San Francisco. I don't have a digital camera (yet) so those are the only pics I have of the car.

I paid $9,700 and on the way back from LA the water pump let go taking the Cam Belt, Cam gear with it. I took it to my guy Modderman in Mountain View for service. While fixing the above I also had him do the front seals, timing belt, gear drives, turbo water pump, distributer cap, rotor, tune, etc. Also front brakes and roters.

$2,900 later the car runs great. I was hoping it was a $9,700 weekender now its a $13,000 weekender. Oh well . . .it still handles better than my previous ride a 1965 mustang fastback shelby clone.

Thanks . . . That sound from what everyone hear and on 968.net sounds farily normal. The pinion was done at 75K miles so hopefully it will last.

Take care . . .

I think I was obviously premature in that above assessment.

I have lost a turbo trans due to ring/pinion wear and it's noise was progressive in all gears. If only when going from reverse into first, prob. quite normal and healthy. I understand the pinion gear to be an "Achilles heal" of sorts on the 6 speed so I jumped to a false conclusion.

Quick Reply: Anyone else have this sound from reverse to 1st
