Porsche actually had a solution worked out when they presented the 968 Roadster. To bad it was dumped for the Boxster.

Those 968 Roadster headlights are exactly what I've been hoping to find. In the absence of a retail version of the roadster lights, I'm going to try the Custom Concepts dual lamp design. Thanks everyone for helping me figure this out!

P.S. dlearl476, you mentioned body paint style headlight covers -- would this be what you're looking for? https://clubautosport.co.uk/product/...race-car-each/

Yes and no. AFAIK, those require removal of the headlight and go in place of where the lens for a sealed beam or H-4 lens would go. I’m more interested in something with outside barbs like a plug that would take up the whole headlight hole and cover the light. Possibly with a bump at the top to follow the curve of the fender. IOW, to mimic the shape of the roadster headlight, only solid body-colored plastic.

Something like this, only the shape of the headlight opening in the fender so they can be easily popped on/off as needed.

Let me see, you want something that requires you to get out of your car at dusk to remove the headlight covers? Even if it is raining, sleeting, snowing....

Well if that is the case I suggest you buy yourself a 3-d printer and go to town. Alternatively, go to a boat yard and ask for the best fiberglass guy around, and pay them handsomely!

Once, I am in my car, I really never want to leave...

Like I said earlier. It’s a rare evennng indeed that I don’t make it home before the foglights alone aren’t sufficient. (More to warn oncoming traffic of my presence than any kind of “light my way.”

On the rare instance I need my headlights (like tonight when I got talked into seeing my old band play at dusk) it wouldn’t be a big deal to pop them off when I got ready to leave.

ps: If it’s raining, sleeting, or snowing, my car is safely tucked in under its cover in a garage.

pss: I know a guy who’s all over 3D printing. I’m going to run it by him and see what he thinks. Shouldn’t take too much brainpower to mock one up in cardboard and go from there.

Came across this while looking at Roadster pics. As for the 968 Roadster vs Boxster debate. Porsche was broke. Killing a separate platform and a completely separate drivetrain made sense at the time. The Boxster and then the Cayenne saved Porsche. Who knows if the Roadster would have.

One thing that kind of bums me out is that the “clean sheeted” the Cayenne. I think the shine was off 4 cylinder motors in larger platforms in the 90’s, but given they can get a reliable 400-450hp out of a 1.8t, I can only guess what they could have done with a 3L turbo or supercharged car. Perhaps, like a lot of things 90’s, they couldn’t get the emissions target they had to hit. But boy would it have been cool if you could have plopped a 3.0LSC engine into a 968.

ps: One of the cooler stories from that era of Porsche was that they built several (2-3) 968s with Boxster drivetrains as incognito test mules. So far, Porsche has kept the pics close to the vest. Try as I might I’ve never been able to find one.

Did not know that. That's pretty awesome. Wonder if anyone has ever done a Boxster engine swap then.

I wonder if the Audi 5 cylinder engine would fit. It is the one that was in the TT RS and currently RS 3.

If I’m not mistaken, there are a couple of threads in the 924, 944, 968 thread re: Audi 5cyl and 1.8t swaps.

Heres a couple of 1.8t’s:

Theres a few LS swaps in there, too, but I didn't find any 5cyl builds. (But I know I’ve read one or two)

Hadn't heard the test mule story before.

Porsche was definitely on the ropes and the Boxster together with the Cayenne helped to breath new life into Porsche.

While the introduction of the new models helped spur interest - it was also the effect of minimizing the productions costs that Porsche learned from Toyota that really enabled Porsche to make these new models more efficiently without sacrificing quality that helped add to the bottom line. This was in part due to reducing the the custom fabrication and introducing more automation into the fabrication sequence.

I've read that Porsche continues enjoy the highest profit margin of any of the automakers under the Audi-VW banner.

Before I bought my 968, five years ago, I looked long at hard at buying an Audi TT RS. Plus, my brother just bought an Audi RS 3. Just a bit jealous.

I can’t see how. They’re practically giving away the Cayman GT4RS at $150K.

Should have know someone would have already gone there.

Think I’m going to buy a pair and send them to my 3D printing buddy to see about gettin lips/barbs on them to make them temporary.
