Question 6 speed in a 3.6 turbo?

I recently rode in a 92 C2T that had a full list of the usual modifications, plus it had been fitted with a 6 speed transmission. The car was very quick and got me to thinking about upgrading my 94 3.6 to a similar set-up. does anyone have any advice/experience on problems with the conversion or ideas on were to find a good used 6 speed capable of handling 400 RWHP?

How 'bout from a 993TT? Thats where I would start. Call Stephen at Imagine. I'm sure he can help... I've seen Turbo trannies with different front case ends (and lord knows what else) so that is was a 2WD tranny. Shifter will be interesting, but if your buddy did it, steal whatever he did.

Bogey1

My 965 is fitted with a 993 TT 6 speed gearbox and 4 WD transmission. I know it has taken some work, but it does actually run and fit perfectly well. I would only go for the TT gearbox and transmission, as it is more solid. My car has 400 RWSP.
I have never tried a 5 speed 965 so could not tell you what works best. This runs exactly the same as my 993 TT only it stretches a bit more in every gear due to a 7200 RPM cutoff I guess.

The cheapest route is get the six-speed transmission conversion from RUF. You can have the six-speed installed into your existing transmission.

Adrian, do you know how much the RUF conversion is and do you know anyone who done this ?

One of the local Porsche Club instructors have a 450-500 hp 964 3.6 turbo with the 993 TT gearbox, he is very happy with it. He said that the 6 speed gearbox made a huge difference. He told me that it was pretty straight forward to install it.

I have been a passenger in his car on different tracks a number of times, 6 speed gearbox seems to be a big improvement especially on the track.

One of the local tracks is terrible gear wise for my car, it's either near redline on 2nd gear 40% of the track feeling bad for the engine, or 3rd gear with very little torque but with lots of frustration.

I am happy that the car was tested on the Nürburgring, on the 21 km track it's just one in-between-gear corner (Ex-Mühle)

Dear Staffan,
Yes I know quite a number of 6-speed conversion owners and I have driven them myself as well. How much does it cost. The cost is variable depending upon the condition of the supplied transmission. The best way is to contact RUF yourself and simply ask. Seeing as you live in Sweden you will have to factor in many additional costs. The best way is to pack the transmission in a suitcase and come down our way for a holiday.
Ciao,

Thanks Adrian, well I am not packing my suitcase, at least not yet.
Just looking for a ball park number, to see if this should be on my "things to do" list or not.

In my books RUF isn't an abbrivation for "so incRedible cheap yoU don't have to think twice beFore ordering" or something.

Thanks for all the ideas and comments. I am going to look into both the RUf and the TT options. I'll post price estimates for you Staffan.

Bogey1, Staffan

You might want to check as well:
http://www.techart.de/Techart_Katalo...sch/6_gear.htm they might have the same program for the US.
I have not contacted them and don't know the prices.

One last source (it is in the UK) is http://www.jmautos.com ask for James O'Connor, he is the one who modified my car, they have a good reputation in the UK + (44 1) 992 788911 or fax: +(44 1) 992 788944 ..no affiliation whatsoever.
Finally, as Viperbob suggested, give Stephen from Imagineauto a call or Steve W., I am sure this is a piece of cake for them.

Jean,

I already contacted Techart about a month ago regarding the 6 speed transmission for the 964 turbo, and I was told that although it is still listed on their program (both the hard copy brochure and on their website), it is no longer offered. I also contacted RUF, but I am still waiting for a reply..

Best regards

Emilios

Unfortunately, since I understand there has been an ownership change, some of their best products are discontinued, probably margins were not to the taste of the new management?

Cheers.

I finally got a hold of Weissach regarding the 6 speed conversion. They had one used one left in Germany with low miles, and wanted $10,500 USD. I'll be looking in a different direction, but thank you for the thought.

VIPERBOB, I'm with you!
