WTB: 964 Turbo...
Greetings folks!
I am back...well, almost!...It has been around 15 years since I owned a 964 Turbo! I had a '91 from '94 - '98 that I picked up (slightly) used after my '93 911 RSA went up in flames...
I am looking for a NICE White, charcoal, or Silver 964 Turbo, hopefully all stock. I can swing a 1994 and that would be nice, but not necessary...
If you can help and point me in the right direction that would be great! I am hoping to buy a nice, clean, no story car from a real owner...
I promise to contribute to your section!
TIA...

Got a good lead on a '94 Turbo in White...The prices sure have gone up since the last time that I looked at one...
Q1: What is the typical rebuild on the engine? 30K - 40K miles?
Q2: The last time I drove a '94 was in '98 and I remember the low speed LSD making a little noise when turning? Before I drive this car is there some noise back there or was my last experience in a car with issues?
Q3: How expensive are a set of genuine Speedlines? Or I may refinish this one if I buy the car...
TIA!

2. If the gear oil doesn't have enough slip agent in it or the diff clutch plates are worn it will be noisy going around corners.
3. As MM stated, very expensive. A better alternative is to buy used and restore but sets of used wheels are hard to find.

1. More like 90-120k miles, depending. I've got leakdowns in the 2-3% range (cold) on an 80k mile engine, as a data point. 2. Mean Machine, thank you so much!
Metal Guru, thanks. Question: 16 years ago was the first and last time that I test drove a '94 3.6Turbo. Back then I had lots of seat time in a 911RSA and in a ' 91 964Turbo both with factory LSD. But when I drove the 3.6Turbo the LSD in that car was very noisy. And back then the owner described it to me as "normal". Is this not the case? I need some advice please.
DK964, Thanks. This car has the factory Speedlnes but badly stained due to "Hard" water.

Anyone else care to chime in?
If you Speedlines are water stained just have them restored by Jim if you are in the U.S. There are many of us that can vouch for his work.

^Metal Guru, what I was told a LONG time ago was that the 3.6Turbo has a complete different LSD set up than the standard Turbo like that one that I had back then. Maybe it is the lock/unlock % or the whole design, not sure. And that is why the car that I drove was "noisy".
I am in the US in IL...the car is around 600 miles from now...stay tuned!

Engine Rebuild - The 1994 3.6 Turbo had a different spec of exhaust valve seals, which wiped oil too well and caused premature guide wear. If the engine hasn't ever been resealed, I would bet that it would be about time now, and it would make sense to replace the exhaust valve guides.
Otherwise the bottom end of these engines are good for 100Kmi +, according to several Porsche experts I've talked to.
Rear Diff - It's totally normal for the rear diff to shudder with OEM Delvac fluid. It's especially noticeable at low speeds, while coasting forward (off throttle) and turning, or reversing and turning.
The 964 Turbo diffs have 20%/100% lockup on acceleration/deceleration respectively. The "extreme" lockup on decel is what causes the skipping and shuddering.

I had Delvac in my transaxle for a day. There's not enough slip agent in it. The noise was unbelievably bad and the car didn't want to turn. I recommend Mobil 1 LS 75 weight oil.
As for the 3.6 lsd being different than the 3.3, I could not find any evidence of this in the PET. I do know that around 1992 or 1993, the clutch plate coating was changed by the factory so this change began in the 3.3. The PO of my car was ripped off by his mechanic who convinced him that the clutch pack carrier in the diff was larger to accommodate the 3.6 and that the 3.3 clutch plates were NLA and "upcharged" him $3000 for the "change".

Yes, all 964 Turbos (and 964 RS models) have the same rear 20/100 diff. I would stick with Delvac, it's the recommended fluid for the diff and provides good transmission shift action when cold and warmed up. IMO the perception that the fluid doesn't have enough slip agents and/or the rear diff is clunking/shuddering is purely due to the fact that it has a super aggressive lockup setting under decel. What Porsche was trying to achieve with this setting is debatable, I suspect it was to quell lift off oversteer and induce stability under braking.
