I wish my trunk plate said 3.6
Maybe this.
There is a 965 prototype and there is a 965.
I refer to my car as a 965 and when I do so, Porsche peeps know what car I have.
Do any other production cars use the 965 parts code? If no, then I rest my case. If yes, then I will come up with something else.

In general, the number designations were only used to designate what chassis a part applies to. However, many parts are interchangeable. Pars designated with the 965 prefix are only a part and intended for a chassis that never came to be. Obviously, Porsche was not going to change much on the body, but a different case for the suspension and transaxle.

Parts starting with 964, 993, 996 and other numbers are interchangeable between several models. At times, an updated part, lets say, for a 996, could be used on a 993 and the 993 didn't become a 996 because of that. Even if the part number starting with 996 had it's part number updated in porsche's official parts list for the 993. The same way a part from a 964 could be used on the 993. In this case, The 933 still continues to be a 993.
When the 964 was built for the first time, not all of it's parts had a part number beginning with 964.
Calling a 964 a 965 is just wrong.*The correct is 964 turbo ( 3.3 or 3.6)

964 Turbo
USA:
89-94, (964's), Turbo model = "964 Turbo"
95-98, (993's), Turbo model = "993 Turbo"
That's how I see it, 965 gets tossed around, but no Tech's or Collectors I know use it, sounds cool though...

"965" is a name; it is not the object--the simplified 959 intended for normal production. While "965" was initially an exclusive name for the object, over time "965" has become another name for 3.3 and 3.6 Turbos.
Debating the application of the "965" designation often uncovers a basic error: confusing a name with an object to which the name can apply.
