Default Dealer description...thoughts?

http://www.fallscarcollection.com/19..._153739649.veh

Dealers reply to my questions:

Thanks for your interest in our Porsche. I have some of the service history but not all of it. The car has had 2 owners. The 1st sold it with 5000 or so miles to the couple that I got it from. I am told that the car has never even been in the rain unless they were caught out, and it looks it..I do have a clean car fax. The car fax doesn’t show any trouble at all. The only modification or additions to the car are a radar detector and a Kenwood stereo. I do not have the original radio. I had the car to the local preferred Porsche expert in our area. The name of the company is Steinels Autowerks. I had the seat switch replaced and a few other items repaired at their advice. We did the top end gasket set, oil and filter change, and replaced the power steering rack. The car does need tires, there are no scuffs in the wheels. The seal around the top is a little uneven however the top seals well so the only reason to replace it would be for appearance and actually it look fine. I do have all of the books, jack, and tool kit. I have a recent ppi on the car from Steinels, his recommendations are … A/C cool not cold (recharge) driver seat bolster torn (worn is a better word) 400 to replace at our trim shop front brake pulsation. Front bumper refinish. Hole in air injection pipe..R.R. tire down to wear bars the other three are dated 2006 and worn. Chain covers, valve covers, breather console, oil return tubes need attention. The car is on my carpeted showroom and there are no oil leaks, there are damp areas in the mentioned areas. The cost for them to do all the repairs is about 2400.00. We sell a few of these cars but I wouldn’t classify myself as a expert on the vintage. I do know a nice car. This is one of the nicest I have seen in 10 years. I got it from the second owner. I would recommend that you have Steinel or one of the greater Cleveland Porsche dealers look at the car. I can tell you all of the real Porsche people rely on and trust Steinel more than the dealer. We don’t tell any stories about a car that we don’t know for sure. I know this car has and will pass a ppi except for what I included here . That ppi was done a month ago. Steinel knows this car he serviced it for the past guy for over 15 years.

My initial thoughts: Sounds like the last owner allowed a bit of maintenance to slip. However, at the right price, it still could be a great car. Where would that price be for y'all? I have something in mind, but I'll listen to inputs first. Thanks again for all your help...the expertise is much appreciated!

Sport Seats Baby! Are they heated, too? Couldn't tell. This car was for sale when I was looking. I really like it, personally. Except I vowed no red. Just a dumb personal thing.

If the engine internals and trans are in good shape, 3-4 grand would probably make it tip top as long as shocks and bushings are ok. Age plays a big role in maintenance not only mileage so lots of hoses and rubber stuff may need replacing.

Sounds like the typical stuff.
Parts on the oil leaks are about $200-300 so labor makes up the bulk of that bill.
I wonder how good the paint is. The sloping hood of a 911 tends to really take a beating from road debris.
Wish I had those heated sport seats!
I'd recommend getting rid of the aftermarket alarm. Most are poorly installed and lead to expensive electrical repairs down the road.
Price seems fair for mileage and condition. I would budget $4-5k for repairs and improvements (RH wheels, new coilovers, ect.).

Okay, I was kind of thinking along the same lines. The little stuff (new ash tray, gauge bezel, center console insert) only adds up to a few hundred bucks for OEM parts. I plan on doing the engine gaskets myself, so that's a few hundred plus special tools required. Here are the bigger things:

1. Tires: ~$1000
2. Brakes: $200 for pads. Hopefully it doesn't need rotors or more. That could get expensive.
3. A/C Conversion to R-134: $1000 (might as well do it right)
4. Driver's side seat: $400 (that sounds cheap for new leather????)
5. Air Injection Pipe: Not sure exactly what he means...intake manifold by chance??? Or maybe one of the hoses on the cold side of the turbo?
6. Oil return tubes and breather hose: $300
7. Removal costs for alarm/radar detector: Who knows what they spliced/hacked to get it installed (umm...that was rhetorical). This is the one that scares me a little bit.

Overall, that's $3-4k plus the "while I'm there" jobs (so $7-8k really!!).

The records are the key. With decent records, this could be a $45k car (after the stuff above is fixed). The dealer is scanning them this week, I'll post the summary.

Any other thoughts are much appreciated (especially if I'm way off on any of my numbers - I'd really like to know).
Matt

PS With all that said, I just emailed John Burer about his car and it's still available. I prefer it whole heartedly over the car I just spent an hour writing a post about (such is life). I know a few folks around here have seen it and have nothing but good things to say.

I like the disclosure at Falls Car collection - seems straight up enough- at the price, you can't get hurt too badly if at all - AND has sport seats ....and it is GR and if you throw on some RH Speedline look a likes - well...I think that car is killer..

Tasracer,

Thanks for that update...that really helps. I really appreciate it. The dealer never got back to me with records, so it's easy not to feel too bad about missing out on it. Seems like $40k won't really buy the type of car I want (even $45k is stretching it).

As for John's car, he isn't sure he actually wants to sell it (understandable). Hopefully that works out, but I'm not holding my breath.

Seems like a 930 fits my budget a little better...maybe I'll go in that direction. I also looked at a 997, but I think I missed out on that (I still really want a 964T, so maybe that's not a bad thing).

I dunno. Thanks for all of your help,
Matt

Matt,
Did you consider the Colorado Springs 964T? That car is a beauty. Not sure if dealer is negotiable at all.

The right car will come up. I'm assuming some people will decide to sell come spring....

Oh and yes Matt has talked to the dealer in CS. They like that car..... a lot.

I called Brian out at CS Porsche a couple times. My problem with the car is the modified rear deck (stereo install). I offered them $43k. They said no. I called back at $45k. They said no. I got no more Schlitz!! So be it.

Still looking!

Can't you reinstall the back seatrests. Thought I saw a pic of them in the frunk. No mo schlitz? Consider brown-bagging your lunch and brew you own coffee?
