Default Trickle Charger - dumb question

Guys -
I haven't had a chance to do any more diagnosis on the car in the last several days as the daily drivers (mine and the wifey's) have been causing their own problems - the Car Gods have not been smiling down upon my little 1.9 car garage recently :-) But anyway I've cranked the car over quite a bit it seems - so I'm thinking about putting a trickle charger on it just to make sure all systems get full voltage - is there anything special with regard to putting a trickle charger on these cars? (I assume not but...) Do you guys just hook them up or do you disconnect the chassis leads?

Thanks-

Brandon

Should be just fine attaching the trickle charger to the battery while still in the car. Use a voltmeter to check for 12-12.5v with the car off. Charging voltage will be upwards of 13.5v with the car running.

I have a plug mounted inside the trunk to plug my maintainer into the car. I haven't been disconnecting the battery from the car prior to plugging it in. Been doing it this way for seven years.
I would be cautious about using a cheap charger while the battery is connected to the car since they tend to have a lot AC ripple that may impact the electronics. Although the battery tends to filter some of that out, there is no need to take a chance.

Brandon, the Owners' Manual warns against fast charging the battery but that is all.
Trickle charging shouldn't be an issue as everyone has previously stated. I keep a battery tender going on mine year round and never had an issue.

I use this one year round on my car as well. I have the lead with the ring terminals perma-connected to the Porsche. Then I can also use the cigarette plug or clamp-on terminals if I need to use it on another car.

That thing looks like a digital car wash sponge. Mine is a little black box, which is way out pimped by your fancy schmancy LCD one. What does a super nice one do that a cheaper one dosent? I think mine was like $75. No buttons and only one light.

It can do a load test....and it's supposed to be able to "condition" a weak battery and bring it back to life (or some such nonsense).....and it also tells me if a battery it too dead to charge (or bring back to life)....or.......something. I know there are other "features that it has and the guy who owns the company has some YouTube videos out there about how great it is, but I'm sure there is a bunch of marketing "fluff" in those videos.

Bottom line: It received pretty good reviews on-line and it was like $99 at Amazon, so I gave it a shot. It's served me well for the ~3 years that I have owned it, but is it "better" than the "black box" type? Who knows.
