Question 964T or 993? Which more reliable, easy to work on?

Hey all. I'd like your input please.

I'm going to garage my daily driver (black '87 3.2 Carrera, 120K miles). I am trying to choose between a 993 (S or Targa) or a 964 Turbo ('94). RUF is out of my price range.

Neither choices are as easy to work on, or probably as reliable as my trusty 3.2, but I just want something different to drive. I turn my own wrench for most basic maintenance and am trying to determine which model will be more reliable and easy to work on (changing plugs, oil, brake fluid, etc.)

This subject has probably been tortured on this list, but I couldn't find it. If I missed it, please send me a link. Thanks a million.

Well I don't know that much and I'm probably one of the least experienced members on this board but this is my thoughts.

The 964 turbo is extremely cramped and hard to work with. The intercooler pretty much takes up the whole engine bay from the top. The 993 has more room to work around in.

I would also think the 993 would be more reliable. There is no turbo charger, wastegate etc to replace.

The 964 will be much faster then the 993 though. I think it’s worth the extra maintenance.

I owned an 87 3.2 for 11 years, you are right mine never skipped a beat. The 964 platform was a big advancement and much more modern design. The turbo is in a class by itself as any of us" Turbo heads" would say. Once you take off the intercooler things will look familiar to you.
You should know that the Turbo has a CIS system which is old but reliable and easily serviced.
C2 turbos are very reliable and driveable.
The main advantage to the 993 from a maint
point of view is that it wont't periodic valve adjustments ,that said it will never thrill you like a Turbo will!!
hope this helps
