964 T track performance
Hi guys,
I am looking at a 964 Turbo 1991 model to buy as a second car and to do some track with. Any of you have experience with the car on the track ? How does it fare compared to the RS ? How is maintenance cost if you drive less than 10000 km per year ?
thanks a lot for your answers <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />
Cheers
Vince

I drive a slightly modified 91 (exhaust and suspension) on the track sometimes and have driven an RS America in an autocross.
If both cars were stock, the RS would run circles around the Turbo. If the Turbo is upgraded with a decent suspension and exhaust, I'd give the edge to the Turbo. But if the RS were also upgraded, it would be close. It all comes down to what you like. The Turbo will always have more power but the RS is lighter.
I like the RS because it's closer to an all around track car then the Turbo.

Hi Vince
I only taken my -91 964 turbo to the track three times, will have another go tomorrow. I would say that the car in general is very competitive to any non-turbo p-car. Based on my somewhat limited experience with the car on different tracks I would say that some tracks are better suited for the car than others.
I have been on a track where stock 964 turbos where outrunning RS's without to much trouble, I also been on a track where the turbo lag made it hard to keep skilled 964 C2 drivers in the rear view mirror.
The only problem I had with using the car on the track is keeping the brakes cool, air ducts should take care of that.
You probably seen dyno charts from guys pulling 400+ hp out of a 3.3 turbo, with R-rated tires I would say you are in heaven.
On my last track event I got a ride with an instructor who's got a 450 hp 964 3.6 turbo with 6 gears, improved suspension, R tires etc. I think it would be more or less impossible to tune an RS enough to keep up with this car.
Having said that, if your focus is track events only and you want to keep the car stock you probably would be happier with an RS.
I had my car for about 18 months, had very little problems, solved everything myself with help form this and other web-forums, have no previous car repair experience. It's very thirsty, eats rear tires and the major services are expensive, I will do one this fall (80.000 km) cost is about $1.000.
I love my car, it looks fantastic and it's fast like hell, that's all I need.

I agree on the previus posts. Apart from that in stock the turbo would be outrun by the RS. I would say Euro-RS is as fast as a stock 1991 turbo. But the turbo driver will have to work harder
I have done some trackdriving with my 1991 turbo(stock) and two things comes to mind.
First is the weight. This can be cured with an upgraded suspension, 3.6T brakes or ducts and R-tires.
Second is the Turbo lag. There are some things you can do to make it less. Or you can learn to drive the car with lag! I have come to enjoy this. It is not easy and takes some guts But done right it´s a great
If I was getting a track car I would go for a RS. If you like the looks of the turbo and Jekyl&Hyde (road&track) quality then go for the turbo.
Vince, as both you and I live in Sweden you can call me if you want some more input. 070-8506118

Thanks for your answers ! I have bought the car a1991 Turbo, red, 58 000 km, very good condition.
Patrick - thanks for the phone number. The car already has after market suspension, it's very very stiff. As for the Turbo lag I think you are right, it's part of the challenge
Staffan - Were you at the track day at mantorp with the Porsche club of sweden ? My decision to sart looking for a Porsche to use at the track comes from that day, before that I was mainly looking at an M3 or Z3 M Coupe. I think the BMW's would require more tunning. I have applied to become member of the PC of Sweden so let's hope we will meet soon!
Jeff - thanks for your comments, I think the RS would be a bit too much, my wife has to be able to drive the car as well
