Smile Thanks Peter, Sydney Motor Show and the Cayenne!

Hello Everyone

First, I'd like to publicly express my thanks for the hospitality Peter V (964 T 3.6 owner in Sydney) showed me on Monday this week.
Peter and I met here on Rennlist. I was in Sydney on Monday on business and looked Peter up for a beer, or two, or three...

Peter picked me up from work in his car (n-i-c-e... emerald green, 36000km, this car is brand new!). We compared notes on the differences between my 3.3 and his 3.6. Decided the cars were financially the most impracticle investment we could have made - but so what , and then Peter took me to the Sydney Motor Show.

The hilite, of course, was the Cayenne, which drew many interested parties. Peter and I (being the Porsche owners we are) muscled our way onto the floor (which was all chained off so no-one could get near the cars). We got one of the guys at Porsche to take us through the specs... so, if you are interested, here's my view:

Outside the car underwhelmed me. Dunno why, honestly, but I was expecting more. Not that she's an ugly machine - not at all... but I just felt that it was, well, underwhelming!
Inside - different story! The car looks about 10 years ahead of it's time (typically Porsche!). It was kitted with Sat Nav, integrated phone, you name it! Very very stylish!
Now - as a current SUV owner, I started to look at the practicality of the car - and found the driving position a little strange (oh yeah - this was a LHD car ). Seriously, the view from the drivers seat did not lend itself to great views of where the wheels were going, and I felt you would have to get used to parking the thing.
Size - this thing was smaller than I expected. I think it was smaller than the BMW, and slightly larger than, say, the Honda CRV. As such, the space available to carry stuff wasn't much more than your average family sedan.

So - overall - great car to carry kids, go on the family holiday, get the groceries, if you have a massive wad of spare change! But it is just not going to impress on the road (IMHO), any more than the BMW, etc does today. And you know, I could help but think that this is the one car, if any, that really will get keyed in the supermarket carpark! Simply 'cos it is a P-Car!!

Would I buy one... maybe I will wait for the V6 version, which will be less than half the price. Or, seriously, I'll take a long look at the Audi Allroad!!

Anyway - the Enzo was at the show too... , as was the new Lambo, Jaguars new ensemble, and, of course, the new Viper about to hit Ozzie streets.

Speaking of the Viper - what with those brakes!! Of all the cars, this one had really small brakes... for the weight and size of the car, and compared to it's rivals...

Anyway - Peter, thanks again! Great time!!

Hi Kevin,
Thanks again for your kind words. Unfortunately after walking around for over 2 hours, we where all too tired for that beer. Nevermind, just an added opportunity next time you are in Sydney.

The offer extends to overseas owners of these magic cars. I don't know if there are any other 3.6 turbo's in Sydney so if you are an overseas visitor and would like to spend an hour or two talking about the 964, drop me an email.

I don't go to the motorshow every year, but this time I did want to the the Ferrari, and Porsche Cayenne. I think Kevin's comments summed it all up. If I was in the market for a 4wd, it would be hard to go past the Audi, considering it is less than half the price.

Anyway to all Rennlist members, keep the discussions, pictures and technical information rolling in.

I try and login every night, eager to read the latest posting.
