Well guys - I keep telling myself that a Porsche, especially the flagship 911 Turbo model, should be rock solid at speed. I guess it's always going to be difficult to troubleshoot something that (a) just doesn't feel right and (b) happens at speeds that high. It took me 3 visits to 3 different Porsche specialists just to find that the rear toe was set wrong by one of them. I'm feeling frustrated that when I give the car to a specialist they can't find the problem and fix it. I mean - they should know these cars better than me.

JBH - I guess they could try the approach you suggested to check each component out "statically" and look for something that's wrong... but this could involve a lot of time and no result if they don't know what they're looking for.... plus of course every test drive at those speeds risks loss of license.

On the way home after the wheel balance for example, I was at around 120mph as I entered a *very* gentle left-hander. I turned the wheel, and - the car didn't seem to respond. My heart stopped and I immediately turned the wheel more, which this time wasn't ignored. Once again the problem seemed to happen on a left hand bend but it was very unnerving to have the car ignore the steering input like that. I wonder if it could be getting air under the front or something like JBH suggested.

Hi John

Sorry for the long delay in replying.

I'm not sure what a 3.6T will sell for over here, but I bought my 3.3l turbo for AU$110K. It also depends on mileage, condition etc. Hope that gives you a degree of comparison.

BTW - if/when you get over here, I will put you onto the people who can help get you a great deal.

Hi Greg

I'm coming in late in the piece on the problem you were having with your Turbo at high speeds... would you mind sending me an email to describe the problem you had, even if you prefer to send it directly - glithen@netspace.net.au

My turbo 'shakes' at high speeds... it kinda feels like a wheel balancing error, but could be something else... if you have any suggestions I would appreciate the input.

Thanks,
Kevin Ross

Hi Kevin,

According to a magazine I bought in February 1999 called "Porsche in Australia" there were five 964 Turbo 3.3s sold in Australia [at a cost of A$265,000!], and 15 Turbo 3.6s. On that basis any 964 Turbo is rare in Oz, but it should be easier to replace my car than to buy one of your car's siblings.

Theoretically, my break even point in Oz is A$125,000 [cost in NZ of A$90,000 + tax of about A$35,000].

A cheaper route would be to get one of those international travel permits and I could have at least one-years use before the car had to be shipped back out of Oz and not have to pay any tax. It may sound sick, but at the moment home is where the car is.

Thanks for the info.

BTW: Have you detailed your new purchase in the running report for May?

PS: Don't forget to change your sign off on the forum to reflect the new car.

Hi John

I will close off my C4 running report in May, and submit the beginning of the turbo ownership report.

As far as getting advice for getting your car to Oz, I can only suggest chatting to someone like James Dutton, at Dutton's here in Melbourne. I recently put another New Zealander onto him, about selling a 78 Turbo here in Oz, but I think by the time the import duties and registration nightmares were overcome, it did not make sense.

Check out Dutton's at: http://www.dutton.com.au/
or email James at: sales@dutton.com.au

(I am not trying to get a cheap ad in for them BTW, I just know James can point you in the right direction.)

Also, and way I can grab a copy of the article you refer to?

I'll update the message closing... Tx!

Hi Kevin,

I'll use my digital camera to take some pics of the page and then email them to your address above.

John,

That would be fantastic.

BTW - I checked with Porsche, and the figures they quoted me were:

3808 turbo's built from 91-93, ie 3.3l C2 Turbo.
91 - 10 sent to Australia
92 - 10 sent to Australia
93 - 7 sent to Australia

Australia did not see the Turbo S, so all the 3.3l were the same. Mine is therefore 1 of 20.

There were 7 3.6l Turbo's brought into Australia (in 93), which makes them very hard to find. At the time, I think NZ was run out of Melbourne, so yours may very well have been thru the books here ??

Anyway - the word from Porsche Centre here is that you would be better to sell in NZ and buy in Australia.

Hope this helps

Good grief, there's a big difference between Porsche's figures and that magazine article. Intuitively, I'd trust Porsche's figures, and they correlate with the proportional build numbers [1,437 Turbo 3.6s were built].

My car is ex Singapore so it definitely doesn't count. There are two definite NZ new Turbo 3.6s [both midnight blue], and a possible third [red]. I don't think they would count in Australia's figures, because if they did then the Turbo 3.6 in Oz would be very rare and the relative shares would be illogically in NZ's favour.

Hi John

I read thru the article you forwarded to me, thanks a ton! BTW - what mag was it?

As far as numbers of cars, I tend to lean toward Porsches figures too. I saw the file that they pulled them from and I counted 20 3.3l Turbo's imported, and 7 3.6l turbo's. And that just seems to make sense.

Anyway, read your latest running report - was thinking I might come and holiday in Van. and pop in to say hello....

Talk soon

Hi Kevin,

Firstly, e-mail your snail mail address to me at mcmillan@vanuatu.com.vu and I'll send you a proper photocopy of that article. I'll include another article that 911 & Porsche World published on 25 years of turbos, in 1999. All good reading.

As for meeting in Vanuatu; I'd be only too happy to. I could give you some tips on the place, if you're interested. It's a pity that neither of us would have their car with them, given that they're so similar, however I could show you my video of the Turbo 3.6! No one in my household is the least bit interested in seeing it anymore...philistines.
