Unhappy Do these mods kill my car ?

Hi all,
Since this week I own a black/black 1991 911 Turbo, so I guess this is the place to be.
I would like to keep it original as it is, but a little extra power would be nice.
It's really fun to read so much about my beloved type.
I read the posts about tweaking the engine with quite some interest, but I wonder: How bad is it for my (82.000km) engine to place a 1 bar spring and that bypass pipe. And if I do only these two mods, is the powergain worth the effort ?

Hi Oscar and welcome to the board!

For a long time I was thinking about adding a 1 bar spring or a an Electronic Boost Control (EBC) such as the HKS. I talked to a number of mechanics most of them say that .9 bar is considered safe and that 1 bar should most probably be fine as well.

However, I decided not to do it. You never know what will happen with that extra pressure, my engine doesn't leak a single drop of oil today, will it start leaking ? What would happen if the car for one reason or the other would run lean and I have that extra boost ? Oscar if you are going to add boost, make sure your Air/Fuel ratio is okey first.

Having said that, it might make sense having an EBC, most vendors claim that the spool-up time will be shorter since the wastegate valve is fully closed until maximum boost is reached, which isn't the case with the stock wastegate.
With an EBC you could dial in any boost value you like. So you could run stock type of pressure on a trackday and run 1 bar when that guy in his rice thinks he's going to teach you a lesson.

There are (at least) two different by-pass pipes.
1. Secondary muffler by-pass, adds sound, adds no or very little extra power, you lose a number of lbs., personally I think the stock sound is fine.
2. Cat by-pass, you add about 10hp and your turbo will spool-up faster, you might get in trouble at a smog inspection.

I have drilled my airbox and replaced the stock airfilter with an K&N filter, haven't done a dyno to confirm any extra hp. Have seen dyno claims on about 10hp for this mod. Personally I think my car now has better throttle response than before.

The guys at Porsche did everything near to perfection, take a look at the 964 board, and see how much money you have to spend per gained hp.

With turbo cars you can add lots of extra power at low cost by increasing turbo pressure, but if you are not careful you just might be adding trouble at high cost.

After attending a few track events my focus is off hp and on handeling. The best "mods" I ever done on my car was a "club race" type of wheel alignment and installing a race seat, felt like a new car alltogether.

My $.02
Maintance first! And,Check your injectors spray paterns!!! Improved my off boost noticabley.

.9 bar spring, de-cat, set co to 3.5 and a clean air filter is the best value (+35 hp???).

Next go to headers, then cams -w- lite fly wheel.

Porsche made the C2 so much more effecent that they got over 10% more power using 10% less boost.
