Post My 964 Should Be Faster Right?

Hello,

I am new to this forum because I only recently purchased my long awaited 964. I previously owned an 88 951 which was the toast of my life.

The subject line of this post really says it all, My question centers around that much anticipated kick in the pants I have read about for the past 2 years. Needless to say I am greatly disapointed in what seems to be the reality regarding my cars performance.

Today I had my technician do a visual and the usual basic service, everything checked out.

I hate to say it but based on FEELING alone... my $45,000 stallion seems only equally as potent as my $10,000 "1/4 horse"

Someone please say it ain't so!!!

Earnest, it is so. It's not like you didn't know, the numbers don't lie.

1988 944 Turbo with chips (I assume you had the Stage II chips because I don't know a single 944T owner that keeps his car stock) puts out 285hp at the flywheel. Your car weighs in at about 3130#. lb/hp = 11 lb/hp. Now, if you are talking acceleration, then you need to know torque. Your 951 has some pretty massive torque in the midrange, you're making about 310ft-lb when the boost is at its strongest. That gives you 10 lb/ft-lb

Your C2T puts out 315hp and 332ft-lb torque, but weighs in a pigly 3270#. lb/hp = 10.4 lb/hp. lb/ft-lb = 9.8 lb/ft-lb.

As you can see, they are pretty similar so you won't see a major difference in performance between your 951 and a C2T, but what you will find is that the useable power of the C2T is greater than your 951. The boost builds quite low and the torque pre-turbo is much better than the 944 Turbo. I was also shocked at how progressive the turbo comes on boost in these cars compared to my 944 Turbo S.

Now, having said all that, the gains to be had with more boost are really impressive on this car and keeping that wastegate shut right until the last moment should give a bit more kick when it comes on. I've seen dyno charts that show 315hp and 349ft-lb torque at the wheels with 1.0bar boost and Andial microfueller on a stock C2T. This compares well to a stock C2T which made 270hp and 299ft-lb torque at the wheels on the same dyno at 0.7bar boost.

If you factor those numbers for flywheel, they work out to roughly 364hp and 401ft-lb torque (I use 13% loss while others use 15-20% which I feel is a touch too high).

Those kinds of numbers will get you 1/4 mile MPH in the 110-112mph range and some pretty stonking acceleration when the boost comes on full song.

I can't wait to install the boost controller!!! I just got the Forge valve for the car which is a work of art, looks very well built.
