boost controller

boost controller
Any idea how many hours of labor it takes to put an HKS electronic boost controller into a '94 3.6 turbo? What should the labor for something like this cost? Anything in particular to watch for, during the install or is it pretty straightforward?

I had one removed from my 993 TT and it took about 2 hours. So i'm assuming that it probably takes the same amount of time to put in.
From what I saw, it's pretty easy to install. Probably the biggest problem is routing the cables from the cabin to the rear engine compartment, but you can just find a gromet to poke through. You have to change some of the vacuum tubing around, but it did not look that complicated.

thanks Jeff. I debated a long time before getting the controller. I was going to change the spring and heard mixed reviews on the HKS. I def. don't want to blow up the motor, so I will probably keep the boost low (.8) but it seems like a good product and I am willing to try it. That is, unless you or other people convince me otherwise. Why did you take it out of your TT? What boost were you running and where did you mount the controller in the car? Did you have an HKS? Did it work correctly? Thanks for all the help.

The previous owner just had it installed on the car before he sold it to me. I don't even think he used it at all.
I had the Greddy Profec model and mounted it in the passengar footwell on the center console. I never got around to programming it. So I can't comment on if it worked at all.
One nice thing about it was that it did include a readout of your current boost. However, I think that the 964 turbos already have a analog boost gauge??
I got rid of it becuase:
a) Didn't want to blow up motor by dialing in too much boost. I think that the max was 2 bar!
b) At least for 993's, you can achieve the same effect via ECU mappings. I don't know about 964's though. If you are interested in this route, you should probably call Steve Weiner in Portland.
c) The boost controller doesn't take other factors (mainly heat, which leads to detonation) into consideration, as the ECU does. There's a bit of debate on this subject however. But didn't want to risk it.
Hope that this helps!
