996tt vs 964 3.6t
My car is a bone stock 94 3.6t at the time I had a full tank with a passenger. The car I ran was a Yellow 996tt with black Techart wheels lowered (nice car by the way) with passenger. I thought for sure this guy would hand me my ****. Sure enough he had a great hole shot (gotta luv AWD) had a quarter panel on me thru 1st gear. By the time I was thru 2nd gear we were even and we stayed that way thru 5500rpm in 3rd. I noticed that his gears were shorter than mine. Even if, I would have had a pretty bruised ego if a 9 year old car stayed with my new state-of-the art P-car. I really thought he would have walked away from me. Maybe the guy was a crappy driver. Who knows? Has anyone else ran a 996tt? If so what were the results?

Slightly off topic but can you give me a review of your Turbo M3 vs your 964? I'm looking at picking up a 2nd "fun" car and these are the 2 exact cars that I am considering. There is a nice 95 M3 right down the street from me, and I could have an AA turbo on it within a week. But then I've always wanted a 94 911 Turbo. I've driven both extensively (stock M3s though, not turbo'd) and I'm having a hard time making up my mind. Can you give me the low down on your 2 cars, how they compare, which one you like "better" and why, etc? I would *really* appreciate it. Thanks!

I'd take a 930 over a M3 turbo, let alone a 965. Some how I don't think the m3 is going to hang with a 996TT like L8Apex said in his original post. And then on performance alone. For looks on a scale of 1-10 i'd give the m3 about a 2 and then 965 a 9-10.

I just recently bought a 3.6 Turbo. I have always wanted one and I am gald I have it.
I had a 2001 M-3. The wow factor is so much better in the Turbo, as well as the quality and the power. I have a 996 and the cars are so different.
People can say what they want, but the older cars are more for the driving enthusiast and the newer cars lean more toward the person who just wants a fast touring car.
I have read the '94 3.6 is a little slower 0-60, but the same 0-100, as the 993TT, I have looked at the specs on the 996TT.
Bottom Line...Give me the 965 over the 996.
By the way, anyone looking for a 996 Cobalt Blue Aero with 19K miles????

limitup,
They are really hard to compare because they are so different. The M3 is an amazing car with the turbo gobs of torque and good HP see DYNO . I have put a lot of $$ into it and at times I am glad I did other times I am not. The car can be temperamental when it is hot, will only drink 100 octane and is impossible to hook up on street tires. The best 1/4 mile time I have had was 12.78. It really shines from a rolling start 5-10mph to 120mph then seems to run out of gear. My brother and I did our own comparison and the M3 would pull away slowly from the 964(bone stock) and my buddies 993tt on a rolling start but over 110mph the 964 and the 993tt would start reeling in the M3.The only conclusion I can think of is very low turbo lag and lower gears on the M3. Bottom line, if you want a Turbo buy a Porsche. I would not suggest a M3 turbo as a daily driver but it does make on hell of a sleeper at track events and on the street.
As, far as the 964 "There is no substitute"! The car has always been my dream car and gives me goose bumps just looking at it! The 3.6t is so refined and fast right out of the box that I think it is as close to "perfect" as you can get! It does not matter if its hot or whatever the conditions seem to be it is always ready to go! This car has a lot of "heart"! The handling is amazing the speed is awesome. I like the on/off switch of the turbo it really is a kick in the pants. I think with a few minor modifications this car would eat the M3 any day! On the track (road course)this car will run circles around the M3. It was and still is my idea of perfection!
Sorry for the off topic.

I kept up with a 996TT in my Ruf BTR(450fwhp @ 0.9bar) all the way upto 270-280 km/hr after which I backed of. He was'nt even pulling away an inch. I was right on his a**. We hit on the gas with me on 3rd gear that is and I did'nt push it that hard in 3rd. Moved into 4th gear and I managed to creep up right behind him all the way upto the time I backed of. Sure felt good.

As a new 964 turbo owner who just went through the process of looking at the 993TT, 996TT and 964T, I can tell you I am really happy with the decision to buy the 964. I doubt the a slightly modded 964 is any slower than either of the newer cars and its a lot more fun to drive and the build quality is certainly higher.
Also, I have owned modified E30 and E36 M3's and both are fun 2nd cars. However, the E36 is to the E30 what the 996 is to the 964... The driver's car is the 4-banger by a walk. The newer M3's are touring cars, though nice to have.

To chime in on the first topic, I had the opportunity to run a new Viper, and what I assume to be a stock 996TT in my car the past three or four weeks. I was on a highway both times, and at speed (70mph), I pulled away from the 996TT by a pretty sold margin (50 yards or so) by the time I hit 170MPH. The new VIPER hung right on my bumper, its a fast car. I had the right conditions to bottom out my speedo briefly and he dropped out around 160 or so. I suspect he had plenty of motor, but better sense than I did that day.
On the M3, I owned a 95 and 99 M3. Just wonderful driving cars, both were daily drivers, and the 99 saw DE events a few times. I bought my first Porsche (94 RS America) in 1998, and traded up to the Turbo 3.6 in 2000. The M3 just cant hold a candle to the overall experience for speed, balance, sound and road feel my 965 produces. For a "fun" car, you just gotta try the rear-drive Turbo from Porsche.

I have a cure for all of that. Wasn't my TT
All seriousness the new Viper is over 500HP and 500TQ. Nothing to sneer at. I ran a slightly modified one and I am pulling 598TQ to the wheels and still wasn't pulling from him like he was tied to a tree. The new generation will shock a tone of people.
As far as the new TT. I have owned many turbos from the past, a 993TT and now a 996TT. The 996TT is by far the best of the run. I thought I would never say that, but in three days the car can be made to 650HP and like TQ. They are sure footed and a suspension that laughs at the curves. Not to mention the AC really works this time. If driven right these cars are very rewarding.

The 964 turbo is a car that I will be looking to buy in the future because it has all the classic heritage of the 911 when the company paid attention to detail and made a quality product. The way that car was crafted was second to none and is one of the best looking, if not the best looking car, I have ever seen. The interior was set up the way a sports car should be and was all quality. Dont get me wrong, the 993 TT is also a great car but it places second to the 964 Turbo.
