Question Bad Boys - black calipers - real Turbo 3.6?

The black Porsche Turbo in the Bad Boy's movie has the correct wheels and rear script for a Turbo 3.6, BUT the brake calipers are black.

Did US Turbo 3.6s come with different calipers on special order, or has this car been modifed? Of course, it could actually be a modified C2 Turbo.

John,

Good eyes John. It should have Big Red brake calipers if it is really a Turbo 3.6.

Did you also notice that there were at least 2 Turbo 3.6 in this movie? On the first sequence of the movie (intro), the seats have Porsche Crests on headrests. Later on, shots of the interior showed seats without the crests.

So, I believe that a few cars were used in the movie and one of them maybe a C2 Turbo with 3.6 wheels or even a replica with the correct wheels.

I bought the VHS tape of the movie not too long ago and now want the DVD version as well, :-).

How many days left before you get to drive your car?

Cheers,

Sonny Vo

Dear Sonny,
Your statements are not quite accurate. The Turbo 3.6s were delivered with Black or Red Calipers. The red ones being the black ones painted red. The first ROWs were delivered with Black calipers.
The Turbo 3.6 does not have big reds it has little big reds. Big Reds only applies to the 993 Turbo brakes and the Big Big Reds or the EVO II GT-2 brakes.

Adrian,

So you are saying that Turbo 3.6 has the same brakes as my '92 C2 Turbo with the option of Red or Black Calipers?

I was under the impression that Big Red brakes started from Turbo 3.6 or maybe Turbo 3.6 S and onward to 993 TT.

Sonny:

The 3.6 turbo that went to non-US markets may have carried larger brake calipers painted black. I have never heard of these in the US, but as you say it is possible that someone just painted their calipers for aesthetic reasons.

To answer the issue of red caliper pad area, I lifted the following information from a Rennsport tech article showing rotor size (f/r) and brake pad area:
C2 Turbo 3.3 front: 322x32 / rear: 299x28 pad area: 422

C2 Turbo 3.6 front: 322x32 / rear: 299x28 pad area: 474

993 front: 304x32 / rear: 299x24 pad area: 422

993 Twin Turbo front: 322x32 / rear: 322x28 pad area: 552

You can see the Turbo 3.6 had more braking surface than the C2 Turbo, but not as much as the 993tt. The 996tt has the same pad area as 993tt. There is no doubt that brake rotor and caliper sizes will continue to increase - someday the 993tt brakes will be called little reds

Hi Sonny,

21 sleeps until I'm reunited with the beast.

Renting the Bad Boys DVD was my way of keeping my frustration levels down. I'll check out what you noticed, as I haven't taken the DVD back. In a similar vein I've downloaded a number of short clips of a red Turbo 3.6 from a German website. I'm a sick puppy at the moment, next I'll be sniffing Mobil one!

Sonny,

Well spotted, there are two different cars in the film. The opening scene car has black calipers and an embossed crest in the seats, whereas the car at the end of the movie has red calipers and no crests.

There is also a bit of hollywood hyperbole in there; Will Smith says it's a limited edition and does 0-60 in 4 seconds.

Can help myself but quote the line at the start of the movie "Too damn right this is limited (edition), no cup holders, no rear seats, it's just a shiny d$%k with two chairs and we're the b&#ls dragging the f*&^%r along. My wife even laughed at that.

Dear Sonny,
Porsche colour coded their calipers many years ago. However for the 964 series it went
Black-Standard
Titanium-C4
Red-Turbo
However for the Turbos both 3.3 and 3.6 you could have the calipers painted Black or any other colour you wanted.
The name "Big Reds" came out because the 993TT calipers are somewhat larger physically in size than the 964 red series of turbo brakes and the standard 964 wheels will not fit over them ( I am not talking 18 inch). Big Reds refers only to the caliper physical size. The EVO IIs are even larger but they have six pistons instead of four.
The newest colour which I am sure you have seen is Yellow. However I have seen GT-3s with red calipers. Again it is an option.
Here in Europe you will see black and red calipers. The stealth people liked Black. These are also the people who have all the badges removed. I have seen a number of turbos which at first glance look like Turbolooks. In the end the only way you can be sure is by checking the part number,
Ciao,
Adrian

PS: There was a limited edition 964 Turbo 3.6 in standard body shape. These had the 3.8L kit installed. Again an option. Very few made and to the best of our knowledge they went to the USA and Japan.

The 'little' big reds on the 3.6 turbo refer to the rear calipers only. The fronts are the same as the 993TT and are 'big' reds.

yeah - and you cant fit the 993TT front calipers to the 964 either....trust me

other differences are the 993TT front discs are 330mm and rears are 322mm, whereas the 964T/993/928 all have 322mm front discs, and 299mm rear discs.

I think you are confused.

The 964T/993/928 all have the 304 mm rotors and "928 S4" size calipers, which are the same size as those on the 944 Turbo S.

The 993TT has the same size rotors as the 964 3.6 turbo but the rotors have a slightly different offset. They are both 322 mm. The 993TT uses the exact same calipers as the C2 3.6 turbo.

The 330 mm rotors only came on the GT2 cars and they use an even larger caliper than the 993TT.

You can easily fit the 993TT "big reds" to the normal 964T by switching to the larger 3.6 T rotors. I'm running those rotors and the 928 GTS calipers on my 944 S2.

Hi Tom

These are the euro sizes for a few P-Cars:
Front Diameter
911 GT1 & GT2 380 mm
993TT 330 mm
993, 964, 928 GTS 322 mm
944TS & M030 upgrade 304 mm
944S2 & 968 298 mm

Not sure where you got 304mm from, but Ive just checked my discs, which Ive just purchased from Porsche (for 3.6T), and they measure 322mm.

Right now, at the garage, I have just had to send back two front calipers from a 993TT as they dont fit. On tues, I will have 2 front calipers off a 94 3.6T (which are red) fitted. However, I have a n/a 91 C2, not a turbo - but dont think that really matters as far as what brakes Im wearing.

Also, the GT1 and GT2 used 380mm discs (here in europe anyway).

tks

The Bad Boy DVD turned up in my Christmas stocking, and I now have more of an idea why there are two Turbos in the film.

According to the Director commentary, they didn't have enough money to make the movie so they made rushes and tried to sell the concept. When extra funding came through they added the opening sequence...and used the Director's car for that. So, if I was a betting man, I'd say the Director had a C2 Turbo and had updated the wheels. I know it's all a bit 'train spotting', but you have to be a bit of a fanatic to buy one of these cars in the first place, don't you?
