Hey All,

Does anyone know the specific differences/characteristics are all the turbochargers listed below? I've been wanting to upgrade the turbo but would like to know which one best fits my needs. A friend of mine has a K27/29 Hybrid...TIA!

K27 7006 Turbocharger
K27 7200 Turbocharger
K27 7200 Hyflow Turbocharger
K27 7200 Hyflow “S” Turbocharger
K27 7200 Hyflow 2 Turbocharger
K29 Turbocharger

I'm an internet expert on turbos only so Ill take a crack at the list based on anecdotal evidence:
K27 7200 - stock for our cars and a step up for a stock 930
K27 Hiflow (HF) - a cut above the 7200
K27 HFS - good for 500 whp and hot (as in 964) cams
K27 HF2 - good for even more than the S and even hotter cams/increased port size
K29 - old big, laggy turbo which I don't think is available any longer
You didn't mention the K27 7006 which some like but has lots of lag
Drop a note to Brian Boddart (Rarlyl8) for more info.

jrgatfh, your car left the factory with the K27-7200. The K27-7006 was fitted on "special werks" engines. Andial, and other tuners used this turbocharger as a upgrade with or without camshafts. The 7200 has a larger compressor wheel and a smaller turbine wheel. The 7006 has a smaller compressor wheel and a larger turbine wheel. The turbine housings on both have the same A/R.

When I purchased my 965 I took my HyFlow design and tweaked the compressor A/R and increased the inlet size to 3", the turbine wheel was clipped for race applications.

The K27-7200 S needs to be added to the list for those that wanted a little more out of the standard 7200. It has a compressor housing A/R tweak and the larger 3" inlet. It will spool up a little quicker and give the topend a little more headroom.

The HyFlow series was designed to replace the aging K29 hybrids with a more efficient compressor wheel and compressor housing mod. The HyFlow 2 series is now built on the larger 7006 turbine wheel and housing. I don't recommend it for the street and CIS car.

Feel free to email if need be.

Paul, Kevin

Thanks for the input as always, both of you are invaluable to this community. With so many different turbos out there hopefully this thread with help people in the future, now all the information/characteristics of each turbo are in one spot.

One last question, I forgot where I saw it but I read that someone took a K27 and used a GT35R cold side compressor. What would the characteristics of this turbo be compared to the ones above? Thanks !!

+1 for Brian (Rarlyl8)...also posts a lot over on Pelican in the 930 Turbo/Supercharging forum, where there's some "enthusiastic" (lol) debate on the K27 variants versus newer turbos like the GT35R (which is what I've decided to go with for my project...arrives Saturday)

Intrigued to find out more about the Garrett/BW "hybrid" you mention...doesn't sound right to me, but curious nonetheless!

Some of these arguments center around the lack of compressor maps for the K27 variants. I'd like to see those maps before I plunk down my hard-earned money for an upgraded turbo. That's why I'm going to buy a Garrett when I do.

I gave up on K27's 13 years ago with finding a good rebuilding being the most important thing, & went with a Garret 60-1 HiFi, loved it. Spooled MUCH faster than the K27 7200 I had prior on my B&B full exhaust.

Then I went with a 60-1 HiFi Ballbearing: wow, another 6-800 chunk of lag removed, and torque doubled at the wheels at 3,000rpm: from 150rw to 300rw @ 3k (same 60-1 wheel with the ballbearing being the only change).

Now I have a T3/T4 billet 62 (Precision) on my '94 3.6t engine: getting that broken in now.

Here is the link I found on EBay regarding the K27/GT35R. I sent the poster a message he seemed very knowledgable, honest and mentioned RarlyL8 too.

Thoughts?
