Default How long should driveshafts last?

My 964T has done ~132k km (about 80k miles) and I've been told that the vibration in the rear is due to one of the driveshafts needing replacing. The wheels have all been balanced (at least twice) and the alloys have been checked to make sure they are not bent.

My indy said he did a "fix" which should make it last a bit longer, but it will need to be replaced soon. Is this a common problem at this kind of mileage? I guess it's probably due to the 355HP going through the wheels too...

It's going to be big money too (not for labour) as the parts alone add up to €1500!! I've been told to replace both at the same time. I guess there is no point in searching for some used ones right?

If you are experiencing that kind of vibration from one or the other axle shafts you should either have
the CV joints replaced or rebuilt on that axle ,no need to replace the opposing unit but it should be
checked at the same time...Bert

Is the vibration always present or only present at certain speeds or rpms? If so there are other more likely possibilities for the source.
CV joints will make noise on acceleration or cornering, mostly and they are fairly easy to diagnose. I can't think of any temporary fix other than replacing. You might take your car somewhere else for a second opinion.
I suggest you do a search over on the 964 forum on "CV joints" and educate yourself.

The vibrations tend to come at higher speeds. We (the indy and I) first noticed it on the rolling road, then when we took it down the road at high speed.

The "rolling road" indy was a different one to the one that did the temporary "fix". It's not a massive vibration, I first thought it was the tyres, so I had them balanced and found that one of the rear alloy wheels was a little oval (1-2mm), so I had it made round again - there are specialists in my area that can do that.

I am tempted to borrow a friends wheels and try them out just to make 100% sure. I'll also do some research on CV jonts as mentioned.

The half shafts themselves will out live you!. The CVs may not but only if they have been leaking or bellows torn some how. Suggest focus on wheels and tires. 355hp is not a problem. these cars were overbuilt!!

I had 141,000 miles on my car when i sold it. I dissassembled the drive shafts and repacked everything, they were in perfect shape, never had a problem with them.

Interesting... I know it's not likely to be the wheels or tyres as I had two different sets on it last year and it was doing the same with both.

I will get the garage to look at the CV joint and see what's going on.
