Default Shifter assembly broke ? Urgent help needed...

Hello all,
Driving down the road and started noticing it was getting harder to get into the 5th gear. It felt more spongier/rubbier if that makes any sense.

After 25 miles, while pulling into the office it felt like the whole assembly was kinda getting lose. The shifter would move freely from side to side and infact you can grab the top **** and can pull the shifter up.

It won't even get into reverse now.

In emergency,i took the car to my indy mechanic not Porsche who is taking the shifter apart but said some thing plastic broke as he can see pieces of it while taking the shifter out from top.

He is now taking the assembly out from teh bottom to see what exactly is going on but he is not very familiar with all this ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is he talking about the coupler on the shift rod?
That's the only plastic that I'm aware of.
If that's true it shouldn't be an expensive repair.
Check the PET: http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessori...artscatalogue/

Maybe this part: 928-116-145-03

Found out the problem... It's the #4 bushings that goes around the # 27 sleeve in the PET diagram that's broken.

Porsche charges $27 each not to mention they have to locate and order it ?

Is there any other part number from any other model that inter-changes with this one in my 1991 964 Turbo ?

Thanks

That's the cheapest part you'll buy for a 965, believe me...

I replaced my linkage bars due to failure and since have also switched to a short shift kit. I notice now that the shifter is very stiff side to side like it has no lubrication. I realize it is a nylon socket with metal ball arrangement but is there anything else that needs or can be lubricated?

the short shift may be hitting the long black belly pan....if you look at c2turbo's picture see if you can turn the red part upside down....that will raise the short shift.....vinnie

Tomorrow I will be back under the car to get the shifter assembly completed.

What keeps the "ball" in Item 1 coupled to the receiver/"cup" on item 15 please? Do you just press it in and it stays? As I did not see any tabs/locks/etc. Anyone has the part number for the "cup" insert as I probably should replace it with new after 30 years!

Which shifter system are you installing ?

everyone here who has done a Rothsport Or others loves them and they completely eliminate the crappy ball/cup designs

yes those ‘cups’ just pop on / off the ***** at either end but I can guarantee you they’ll be completely worn out. Same with main shift rod that goes to the back. The front end of the forward is replaceable (as you can see from the PET diagram part 16) but I think for the back end you have to buy the whole new rod (15). Both parts $250. I checked for a friend recently. If one end is worn so will the other is my guess

I don’t think you can buy just the plastic cup that pops into the rod. At least I didn’t see it when searching for parts for my friends car

here are some short vids of mine on a 100,000kms car and I’m assuming they were never changed but not sure.

I just finished installing a Rothsport shifter and FD forward and shift rods and it’s amazing.

Thank you Das76! My car is 99%+ stock and pretty low mileage, but very untouched/uncleaned for 30 years, so I have had to deal with a ton of grime.

My car shifted just great prior, but yesterday, I finally put the engine/transmission back in after a 100% rebuild. I have some time since the engine is not starting anyhow!

This is what it looks like, and I hope to find the part number for the "cup" and press it in and reuse the rod. It seems like a waste to buy a new rod!

I can appreciate the 'stock' for sure. You can keep the stock look with the leather shifter with Rothsport and get the advantage of better design. Just because something was designed by P 30-50 years ago doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be improved! (cracking door pockets is a classic example - they still have the ***** to sell them with plastic that cracks and at nearly $1000/pair!)

Someone might know the part # (above my paygrade if it's not in the PET)! haha.

This part: https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...928-116-145-03 was reference by Paul B above and MIGHT work? looks like someone posted some comments there that it might work, and for $17 maybe worth a try! I would also switch out part 16. Maybe it has the same cup as the other end? Buy 2 of them and get the cup out???

How about your gear rod #12? is that coupling worn too?
I think for the gear rod you can but a new rubber coupler even though that is not in the PET. If not FD Goldenrod is.... golden!

Yes, that 928 part number is what I've used. Note that it is REALLY hard to get on over the ball at first. I've resorted to using a piece of wood on a floor jack and pushing it up with that.
