Default Suspension Upgrade

Hi, I'm new here, so be gentle

I bought a 964 Turbo a couple of months ago. It's pretty standard, but has the factory X33 option (355BHP) and some tuning that took it to 401BHP. Since then I have put the cat back on to get it through it's German TUV, so it's probably more like 370-380 now, but still very quick

The car's standard suspension is pretty good for me, but it's riding too high. I find the suspension quite hard and don't want to make it any harder, what springs would you use to lower it? I'm considering just using H&R springs without changing the shock absorbers, but if it's going to make it too hard I'll probably need to change the shocks for some adjustable ones.

Any thoughts?

Best option is HD Bilstein with Red Progressive H&R springs.
Way better than standard setup with Boge shocks.

Where can I get the HDs from in Europe, I can only find B6 Sport shocks for the 964T. See: http://www1.carparts-cat.com/pkw/par...1,1,0&NID=0,11

Sounds like you visited the PelicanParts Turbo site first

Welcome and congratulations on your acquisition (is that gentle enough?)
Do you have any further details on the tuning performed on your car?

I replaced the original shocks with basic Bilsteins and the car already was lowered with H&R springs...the best money I have spent on the car...it was a noticeable difference before I got to the end of the block...get the Bilsteins!

I have no clue to be honest what has been done to the car, I'm still going through the service history to try and work it out. The car does have a stainless free flow exhaust of some kind and it's louder than normal, but I'm a little clueless at the moment as I'm new to the Porsche scene. There is a recent dyno test showing 401BHP, but that was before I put the cat back on it.

The X33 option cost ~33.000DM (~16k Euros) when new in 1992 which is pretty impressive, especially when you consider what Porsche did to the engine to get the extra 35BHP over the standard Turbo.

The Porsche specialist garages that have seen the car have been pretty impressed with it's condition (1992 with 128k km). The leak down test showed all cylinders running at 10% or below (except one running at 12%).

Looks like I need to up my budget to include the shocks then. I can get the adjustable H&R monotube kit for ~1.400 Euros - has anyone seen this used anywhere?

Welcome to the world of Porsche, you have a beautiful looking car. I love the colour!

Next week I'm having KW Variant 3s fitted to my 3.6, theyre fully adjustable and are designed for fast road use. People that know them on our cars rate them very highly, but unfortunately I cant say I've actually experienced them yet. If you want to wait a week or two I'll let you know my first hand experiences. Theyre about Euros 1500 I believe before fitting, alignment etc.

As I see it, there are three possibilities (in price order - lowest first):

H&R monotube kit (adjustable)
Bilstein Sport kit (non-adjustable, Euro RS height)
KW V3 kit (adjustable)
Bilstein PSS10 kit (adjustable)

I would be interested to know what you think of the KW V3s. When it comes to spending between €1500 and €2200 on a kit (plus fitting), I need to get it right as I'm sure you'll appreciate.

My main requirements are lowering the car and getting a bit more comfort on B roads - I can't really drive much more that 80km/h without the feeling that the car is going to fall apart.

My Astra Turbo has a hard suspension set-up and even stiffer when you push the 'Sport' button, but it seems to soak up the B roads very well - I can easily do 100km/h comfortably.

I plan to upgrade the car in the winter of 2010, so I have a little while to decide.

I'll let you know my thoughts on the KWs in a week or two.
Surprised to hear you say you cant drive over 80 km/h, mine smoothes out as the speed rises and i'm still on standard suspension (albeit refreshed). it gets a little floaty at the front once over 100 mph on A and B roads, hence my change to the KWs. Sounds like your current suspension is very far from where it should be.

Congrats on the car ! Midnight Blue?

Anyway, I have to ask: Is there a man sleeping in the car at the first picture?

My car's geometry was set-up by JZM at the point of sale. On the A roads and Autobahns it's great, just not on the B roads - maybe mine are a lot worse than yours, or maybe the shocks have gone hard with age.

Midnight Blue - just after sunset, so it looks a little dark or black.

I see what you mean about the driver, I never saw that before you mentioned it - is there a ghost of a child in the driver's seat of my car?!!

I have the PSS10's on my 3.6. Easy to adjust and dial in. I personally think the coil-overs are a better use of $$ in the long run.
