Shorter gear ratios
Interested if anyone has gone with shorter ratios? Had this on a former car (E30 M3) and really good mod.

Where did you source the gears? Did you do motorsport syncros? What differential specs?
I am contemplating beefing up my 5 speed or opting for a 6. I'd like to have a better freeway cruising gear.

Agree with the 1st post. Shorter gear or 6 speed transmission works like a dream on our cars (unless you like the off boost to on boost character of the car).
I went for the 6 speed transmission. Was really hard to find gears for the original transmission + the turbo gear box netted a higher price (4,5k euro) than the 993 gear box I found (3k euro). I had the 993 transmission looked over just to be on the safe side. There was no big difficulty with the swap in itself.
FYI the differential parts in my car comes from a 996 CUP car. Got it second hand for 500 euros.

I did a trans refresh and swapped out the 2-5 gears to those from an /03 trans. The change did keep the car legal for ASP and also are readily available ($350 for the gears). I thought about just a trans change however the beefed up main shaft of the /52 seemed like a good idea to stick with.
Top speed in gears are reasonably set now for autox and track (ie....64 mph for second, 153 mph for 5th at 6k rpm and 275/17" tires). The biggest noticeable change has been the "loss" of the 5th gear as an overdrive. It's more an active 5 speed now where as before 5th wasn't very well set for the track.

Damn you guys for not posting this info about the 03 gears at the time when I was looking at geting shorter gear ratios, 4 years ago now ;-)
Anyways the 6 speed has worked fine so far, track and all, and it was not more expensive (short term at least) + the 6th gear is somewhat usefull for those who still drive back and forth to the track like me.

I have some shorter gears from a G50/52. They will also fit G50 5 speeds
Ratios are:\
3rd gear 1.33
4th 1.04
5th .86
$1050 for the set of three. They are virtually new--they were used for less than 1 hour. ( Car was sold with another transmission in it-- the trans itself was sold elsewhere with stock ratios)

Second gear has become more effective for autox. Enough that I've had to adjust my driving style a bit as I'm spending more time in the torque band. To date I haven't had to worry about 3rd but I would guess that day will come at some point.
For the few DE days I've participated in, 5th was not as useful as it could be. Shifting from 4th to 5th would put me farther down on the power (not torque) and acceleration would fall off noticeably. With 5th now closer to 4th I'm accelerating faster and carrying more speed on the top end. Enough to get me out of my comfort zone for sure! That extra 10-15 mph on the straight (for me) is scary....and I need more safety gear for that!!
For the diff...I've read there are better options but having never experienced an A to B comparison, I kept the stock unit and replaced the plates. Interestingly after 90k miles the existing still had life left, but I figured I might as well do the "while you're in there" change. I just need to be sure and not drive a car with the newer unit so as to avoid regretting my descision ;-)
Something to consider on swapping out a /52 trans is the stronger 1st gear. There is a reason folks want this trans over the others. Also the broard torque curve of the 3.3l engine lends itself well to 5 gears instead of 6. With that said, you could trade out of the 5 speed for 6 and have money in hand (but there is probably a reason for that).

Is anyone on here a tranny guru? I am trying to find a compromise for a 1/4 mile and standing mile tranny. I have a g 50/52 in the car stock for now. The gearing now is not that great for the quarter.

I am looking at swapping in some 2-4 non turbo gears. I want to keep my stock 1st gear, and swap out my turbo 5th and non turbo 5th gear depending on what I am doing with the car. Anyone have some first hand experience with this on a BIG hp car?
