Default AC idler pulley question

Ok, I guess I've put this off long enough....

Any words of wisdom from the board? It's a 3.6 if it's different than the 3.3.

How is it held onto the engine? I can only assume this is easily replaceble but I can only see one bolt (nut) holding the bracket onto the AC stand. What needs to come off to get this out? It was a quick glance (the barn is really cold) so it could be more obvious when I look closer.

Once I get it off can I simply run down the street to the industrial bearing supplier and replace the bearing or does one need to but the Porsche part? If anyone knows the part number that could help.

Thanks...

Its just held on by an allen screw. I tried to find a bearing but could not. So i ended up getting the roller from Sunset Imports, its been a couple of years but i think it was like 180 dollars or so. Thats high but better than the 250-300 quotes i got elsewhere.
Try this website maybe you can find a matching bearing on it.

Good luck

Hi,what is the failure?..
Noisy bearing i take it?.Just out of interest what is the exact noise you are hearing from it?
I have a ticking noise somewhere around that area and may suspect the idler.

Stuart,

Yeah, it's making a whining noise.

I'll let you (and the rest of the board) know what it took to replace the bearing.

Mine just became very whiny... when i took the roller off and spun it it sounded kind of like it had sand in the bearing.

That's exactly what I found when I got mine off.

The hardest part was getting to the the rear bolt that holds the compressor bracket. Once I got slack in the belt I could get the bearing off and it indeed makes a noise.

I have a replacement on order and it should be here next week.

The new part finally got here. I'll put it on tomorrow when I get back out to the country (where the car is sitting).

Autohouse Arizona had them in stock, normal price (list) is $224.03 and their price is $22.99. $31.50 delivered to my door.

It's not a Porsche part (it's a part made in the UK) but at that price I was willing to give it a try.

I post this just in case a few of you may be wanting to do this but were put off by the over $200 price.

Wow that is a good deal! Can you please post details of the part number and manufacturer? I bet it costs more to buy it here in the UK...

Here't the URL:
http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...0Pulley/Roller

The Autohouse sticker on the box says 930 126 21601, which I guess is the Porsche part number.

The writting on the box says:
Ruville
Belt Tensioner
7m26a1

and then another number on the lid - 55210.

The idler can be bought from your local ford dealer, i went to euro car parts and they cross referenced it for me from memory it was £6.50 :-)

Porsche thinking must go something like this:
We'll buy that Ford part for 6.50...
Now we'll call it a Porsche part, so we'll charge 100
Its for a Porsche turbo so lets see if we can charge 200
