suggestions on sourcing an LSD?

Since my car is apart, I decided to go ahead one step further and right the last of the mechanical wrongs with my car. So, I need a new or rebuilt LSD since mine is entirely missing. This car will not be tracked and mainly driven for fun on the street, so I don't need an uber aggressive track-spec unit.
Suggestions? The Guards are great, but are expensive. How are the Kaz units?

Call Joel Reiser 584-624-3899, he has a slightly worn 996 Cup LSD which would be perfect for a street car. The street car breakaway torque upper range is at the minimum end of the race car specification. And they use superior plates to the street car. So, while the plates are slightly worn, they will be perfect in the street application and last longer than new street plates. I've used this approach in the past with good success.

How much does it usually cost to replace or rebuild a worn/loud LSD (labor/parts breakdown)? My '91 turbo definitely has the stock LSD but I haven't determined if the grumbling it is making is the usual grumble or something more significant.

While we are on the subject....what type LSD would the factory (ie...G50/52) unit be (how many plates)? Is the stock unit worth rebuilding or is it better to go with the newer generations?? Can the stock 20/100 locking unit be modified during a rebuild to say a 40/60???

The stock unit is a small housing 20/100 unit shared with the G50/10. It is the same size as the 40/40, but uses 4 plates instead of 2. You can mix and match 40/40 parts as long as you maintain the same clutch pack thickness. The 993 and later differentials are larger more robust units, however, the street units continue to be 2 plate with street type ramp angles. The RS, Cup, Cup RSR, GT2 use a 4 plate motorsports unit with 40/65 locking. Since it is a larger unit, the internal parts cannot be used in the G50/52 unit.

Thanks Geoffrey...always good information. The reason for my questions is I have a LSD (20/100) out of a G50/52 that I'm trying to figure out what to do with. Rebuild to stock, rebuild to a different configuration, or sell to buy a more modern LSD. My use happens to be more autox then DE with a mixture of road driving thrown in. So it needs to due it all...
I saw this thread which got me thinking of rebuilding;

If you are just using it on the street and for some AX, then rebuild it. If you are tracking the car, then I'd recommend upgrading to a large unit that will handle the heat better.
