Default New Purchase - 3.6 Turbo

Hi All,

Ive been looking for a really good 3.6 turbo for months and I finally found the perfect car, I purchased it last Friday. Its midnight blue with black leather, the best thing about it is it only has 20k miles with all the history. Its only covered about 500 miles in the last 5 years !. Im over the moon about it as I didnt think id find one in such good condition with the low mileage. Im so impressed with the car im thinking of using it as an everyday car. Picture of car attached (just washed)
There are a couple of things im going to get investigated, firstly when I accelerate hard there is a smell of petrol or petrol fumes for a few seconds - not a big deal unless your driving quickly for a while, does anyone know what the cause could be ? The other thing ive noticed is the steering feels vague at certain times / speeds, I might just be being picky as ive been driving a 03 M3 for the last year but was wondering if anyone else experiences this ? The last thing is when reversing there can be a bit of a clunk / noise sometimes, the seller who was a Porsche specialist said that all the 3.6's do that and it was the limited slip diff.

Regards,
Eoin

Sweet find. The LSD in these cars all make that sound I haven't heard of one that doesn't, some might be louder than others. Might want to have that smell checked out. I remember reading that there is recall of some sort on the tank or nozzle coming out of the tank that leaks. Do you smell gas in the front bonnet?

Congrats! When/if I get one of these, this is one of my preferred color combinations. The vagueness of steering might be related to the age of the suspension, if stock.

Enjoy.

Congrats.

midnight blue is an excellent color. Were are you located?

I would agree on the suspension. the Boge shocks were not too good from the factory and after so many years we have found cars with as little as 13k miles on original shocks were shot.

Most everyone changes over to bilstein HD's and H&R either green or red springs. Improves the handling 100%.

The smell might be you are running a bit rich. better rich than lean. My car is set a bit rich and I get that smell under very hard acceleration, Since i run 1 bar spring I prefer to be safe and live with the smell.

Thanks for all the suggestion and comments. Im going to have a proper look over the car next weekend. Im located in Dublin, Ireland. The car will stand me about 65k - 70k euro depending on how much tax the revenue decide to charge me for importing it. Ah well I think its worth it. I intend to keep it forever. Im trying to find a good specialist in Ireland to maintain it but there are very few.

Eoin,

Beautiful car! Did Ray Northway knock anything off the £43k asking price?

The fuel injection system on the 965 is pretty archaic and on full boost will dump a lot of fuel into the engine, so it may just be this.

Re. the steering this should feel pretty good so I'd do the usual checks: tyre pressures, age of tyres and suspension.

Ray's right re. the LSD they all tend to graunch in reverse, especially on lock.

I'd suggest you find a good Porsche specialist and get them to give it a good going over just to put your mind at rest. I'd suggest posting on Pistonheads re. specialists in Eire.

Finally, join Rennlist as there's a wealth of experience and knowledge on here.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Tim.

Eoin,

congratsulations on the new purchase. I talked to Ray about this car when I picked up my 3.3 from him last October. He didn't have it in the workshop at the time, so never got a chance to see it. If I needed a RHD car I'd have chopped off my left arm to get this one, colour combo, mileage etc.

I'm sure any issues can be resolved and with the tech help and knowledge from this group you will be fine.

Ok new poll idea, how long before Eoin gets the bug to modify?

Steve

Yea I think you could be right about the tyres, I had the car inspected by Peter Morgan and he said that the front tyres didnt match the rears apparently the ride suffers as a result. Ray was great to deal with. He was selling it on behalf of a customer and I got him down to £40k sterling, he even delivered the car to Holyhead (4 hour drive) at 1am so I could get it on the ferry back to Ireland. As regards modifying I think il leave it as is for the moment.

Definitely a nice find there; congrats!

A new set of tires won't be a purchase made in vain. Look forward to seeing more posts from you in the future. Welcome to the crowd...

Suggest check the fuel filler neck for the 'smell'. Mine cracked and I would have a fuel smell on braking and cornering. You can get a new one from Porsche and self install. If thats the problem.

Welcome.
Agree with what's been said: fuel could just be rich when on boost (smells even more if you're behind a 965!); steering and suspension can be very nervous until you go Bilstein etc.

I had a good look around your car the night you got it, before Ray set off to deliver it, it really is a stunning car. As you know it has had very little use so i'd expect that you'll have bits and bobs to sort out, the suspension being one of them. I'd be tempted to try and keep it as stock as you can, a 1.0bar spring wouldn't hurt though

Great looking car! Congrats.

This is a simple thing regarding the smell of gas, but I found that topping off the tank when filling up can cause this to happen. So make sure that you are not overfilling.

Like someone already said, the sounds in reverse are normal.

I think it's great that you plan to drive it. Enjoy the car!
