964 Turbo vs. 993 (NA)?

I've driven both and raced my former 964t against many 993s.
- The 964t is marginally faster in a straight line, but the delta is not huge
- The 993 will handle a bit better, but again the difference is not big
- They weigh about the same
- The 964t will cost a bit more to maintain if you have a shop do the work, but not much more if you do the work yourself
For a daily driver i'd pick the 993 and for a weekend or track car the 964t.

Guys..this is one of my first posts over here after lurking I couldn't resist!..
First off which 965 turbo are you speaking of '91-'92 or '94..also are you debating wether its faster
or more comfortable for daily driving than what ? 1. normally aspirated 993 or 2. 993 TT
I've owned and driven both extensively maybe not trackwise but very spirited and long distance..
drove my TT from LA to DC in three days !
In '95 owned a low mileage '94 965 and this was at the time the fastest vehicle i'd ever driven bar none( it was enthusiast owned previously) only mod was a T36 turbo ..
Traveled at the incredible pace of 175 miles an hour extended on miami parkway and fla turnpike!
To say the least those cars are fast stable and near bullet proof! Presently own two 993TT's and have
yet to even approximate the haste my '94 had ,much more touchy and skittery with the four wheel..
Looking forward to modifying my earlier '96 and trying it out as two wheel drive, removing front
pumpkin!
For the money the 993 TT is the better all around ,speed, comfort etc..of course much quicker than
normally aspirated !
The 965 chassis alittle more raw yet very stable,a/c upgrades and turbo at least on 3.6 awesome!!
my 0.2 thanks Bert

My '91 3.3 964T was only marginally faster vs. a Vram 993NA. I am talking cars prep'd for PCA club racing, so the engines are stock, but they would have headers & open exhausts. A 993tt will crush a 3.3 964T, but the 3.6T is about the same speed as the 993tt.

Colin, very interesting experience.
Clearly you have much more track experience than me, and also the cars you mentioned would have been modified/ tuned to make faster and improve handling.
Not disagreeing but throwing this in for debate/ confusion.
On a drag race on the track, I 'beat' a 997S from 0 - fast as you like. Top speed was about the same. Surely a 997 is faster than a 993? I was easy faster than a 996 (again faster than a 993). At the time my car was a standard 3.3, with no cat or muffler (but standard headers). I couldn't however hold a light to the 993TT in off the line acceleration or top speed.
I agree the 3.6 is quicker/ faster in standard form than a 3.3.
However, many of us mod our cars

I think we have gone a little of course here. 964 3.6 turbo is far far quicker than a normally aspirated 993. I have never tracked my turbo so I cannot comment on back to back lap times but I have raced a normally aspirated 964 carrera 2 against 993's and they were still a good match for one another. Taking suspension and geometry aside drive six 993's back to back all standard cars and some will be quicker and handle better than others. (same goes for any Porsche). Could I drive my 3.6 turbo everyday, definately a big no, I would loose my license. I used to have a 993 tip coupe as a daily driver and that was a very nice car. I was offered a 993C2S almost new many years back from a dealer and they let me borrow it for a weekend. It was awful. Over sprung and under damped. (maybe it was just this particular car that had a problem, I do not know, I did not buy it).
My own driving experiences are that the 964 has that hewn from granite feel, solid and heavy. The 993 feels lighter but I believe this has more to do with the weighting of the power steering in reality. The turbo is a far better looking car than the 993 I believe looks ungainly from some angles. Mels car looks the nuts because of the RUF wheels and bumber. Stunning. The GT2 feels and is very nimble in comparison. Much quicker and feels more chuckable.
Back to the original question. For a weekend or occasional car the 964 turbo wins hands down. For everyday driving I'd take the 993 but only to keep my license. (GT2 excluded). If I lived in Germany I would not have to worry about either.

If you use published numbers the 993 and 3.3L 964T are not much different. The 3.6T is considerably faster than both in stock form. My 3.6T in stock form was not much different than a stock 993TT. Side by side my 3.6T when stock compared to a friends 993 was considerably faster. Handling was about the same and feel was not much different through the turns with the 993 being a little easier to deal with on bumpy surfaces. Since the 3.3 and 3.6T's are essentially the same car with different motors I would say that Colin's assessment would be most accurate and he does have lots of experience with these on the track. Although it can depend on the track too. Some are more conducive to N/A cars and others turbos.
If you are looking for a weekend driver and can spend 10-15% of your purchase price on some bolt on mods you would have a much faster car with the 3.3T than the 993. Unless you supercharge the 993 it is not going to be as easy to make it faster. The varioram engine is nice but the turbo is gobs of fun. Hell my 250 hp C2 is a blast to drive. Either car can benefit from a Light weight flywheel. You have to decide what you want from the car as the way they deliver power is completely different. The one big down side I found to the 993 was the tranny. I have no need for a 6 speed and don't like the way the US 993's are geared.
Looks are subjective and although they are both great looking cars it is up to the individual to say which looks best. I for one love the rear end of the 993 but am not a fan of the front and side views. Although to say one is superior over the other is false they are both stunning examples of great engineering.
