964 Turbo vs. 993 (NA)?
Full disclosure: I've cross-posted the same question on the 993 forum to get their side.
Forgive me for the odd comparison request, but I am curious if anyone can offer a first-hand comparison between these two cars. Nicer naturally aspirated 993's (particularly C2S, C4S) seem to be priced similarly to non-museum piece 964 Turbos so it got me to wondering. Which would be a more enjoyable car for regular spirited street driving (no track use)? I understand the Turbo will cost more to maintain but also offers much greater upgrade potential. For the sake of arguement, how do they compare stock vs. stock?
Thanks,
Kevin

I drove a couple 993 Carreras in my shopping efforts. I was sure that was my logical "next Porsche" having owned an '89 3.2 and a '71t. I was actually dissappointed with it. I had always lusted for a 965 but thought the 993 Carrera was "the right thing to do", and three months later I'd be bored as hell with that car.
Specifics; the 993C2 has a more contemporary chassis, but actually felt too refined and numbed out after my previous Porsches. The 3.6, especially OBDII/Varioram cars make good power, but if you know anything about tuning turbo cars, you know you can throw huge cabbage at a normally aspirated car and get negligible results. I then drove several 930s, and though they had all that attitude I missed from my earlier Porsches, I just couldn't get over the gravel-crusher 4-spd. So I shopped for 9mos for the right 965 and LOVE this car. Some aspects of the 965 are humiliatingly archaic (CIS), but for me that's just a project target. The overall package between the no-apologies Widebody, the brutal power, sh|ts&giggles handling, and just enough old-school attitude make me love this car.

Exterior:
For me the 964 turbo is the ultimate 911 with the sexiest curves.
Interior: pretty much the same and dependent on specific car options
Performance: Can't compare. The turbo is simply out of this world.
Handling: For stock cars, not much difference
Value: The turbo is not a depreciating asset - not sure about the 993
I don't regret making the switch from my 993C4S to the turbo.

Thank you guys, this is all fantastic input. Sonny, I appreciate the thread link, I searched extensively but never found that thread.
I hope to poke my head in again soon with new-to-me car pictures. Either way it'll be a big step from my '88 3.2.

Look I've driven both and i've had faster cars. My Mercedes (C55 AMG) was faster than my 993. But when it's not about being the fastest the 993 is hard to overcome. Yes Mike has the faster car (he always has) but my 993 is a BLAST to drive. Granted my 993 has the Bilstien HDs on it and a short shift and Ruf steering wheel. Ok most would say "who cares" but it adds to the feel of the car.
I will tell you this IMHO. The 993 is far better looking that the 964 Turbo (at least I think mine is) . Ask my brother by the way what he wants when he sells his 3.6 turbo (which i think is awesome)....... Judge for yourself.

If driven like for like, a big difference will be that a 965 will cost much more to maintain.
If you have deep pockets, the 965 is one of the biggest thrills in motoring you can get.

The RUF bumper and the wheels on your 993 look awesome! Great look!

I have looked in great detail at a stock 993 and the body did nothing for me. I much prefer the 964 & the 911, not sure which I like the best out of those two. I think the side skirt on the 964 kind of looks what it is, stuck on. However, on my 964 3.8RS look 930 it doesn't catch your eye when you look at the car in real life, it just looks awesome. Same for a stock 964t.
Now, as for the 993 GT2 compared to the 993 that is a different matter, the GT2 wins easily over 911/964.
What would be your view in the looks department if your car was stock Mel?
