Default Sorting out new(to me) car, problem # 2

Car is a 3.6T w/ 70k mi., Driving around I heard an occasional creaky/clunky noise coming from the (what sounds like) right rear area. I found I can make the noise happen consistently if while driving slowly, I turn the steering wheel back & forth like I'm trying to heat up the tires like a race car driver.

Anyways, I put it up on a lift, & didn't see anything obviously wrong. Wheel is on tight, I tried pulling on the wheel to see if the bearing had any slop, but it felt tight. Just wondering if anyone else had similar noises/problem & what it turned out to be. I know that nobody can exactly diagnose with this little info over the web, but I'm just looking for some direction as far as most common things to check for.

Thanks

Does your car have the stock exhaust system? I found that a few of my B&B headers' heat exchanger connections were loose and rattled around back there. If you still have stock headers; I would inspect the rear heat system since you have alreay posted concerns about the rattle.

hi,

the clunky noise comes from the limited slip differential and is quite normal as long as it occurs while tight cornering.
with new tyres the noise is much more quiet.

If its the LSD change to a different oil for the transmission. Redline is good stuff to use. Mine made the noise - and was gone after using the redline.

Hi Fritz, it's not so much tight cornering as it seems like just a quick abrubt change in direction causes the noise. I was told the noise in the diff was normal when going in reverse.

At this point, I have wheel & tire issues too, so I'll have to fix that first before I can figure out this much further.

Yes, as far as I can tell, the exhaust is all stock, but I kind of doubt that the noise is related to that, but I'll double check.

Well, I took the car into a shop today to get fixed. Actual problem could not be identified by basic inspection. I was quoted 4 hrs. labor to R&R the whole Right Rear suspension. Once they get things taken apart, hopefully the problem will be found. I was told that it should be done in one week. I'll update the findings then.

So the phone call today said that they could find no problems with the suspension, but it needs new motor mounts & a trans. mount, for about $2,000. Does that price sound reasonable for that work?

Mine also makes a noise only in reverse, and especially while I am backing up and turning...

That's just probably normal noise from your diff.

Same here Bill, I hear the noise when backing up and turning. When I bought the car, Ray from RPM said I would hear it when going slow and turning and that it was the LSD. But I only hear it when backing up and turning going up on a slant (so only when backing out of my brother's driveway). It's common from what I hear.
