Default best for cleaning carbon from heads/valves

I am cleaning my heads before i send them to the machine shop for some work and was wondering??....apart from sand/bead blasting them,,is there any other way to clean heads of carbon i.e. thinners,gunk(engine degreasent)???
any suggestions??

You mean the exterior heads, or the combustion chamber??

I would be careful, especially in the exhaust port. There is a ceramic coating that you don't want to damage.

A good machine shop should have the ability to clean the heads before machining.
