EXTRA SOUNDCLIP Triple Bypass - Sounds Serious!
This week I had an impulse.
I ordered a G-pipe and today it was fitted!
So now I have the full bypass! ie. cat, wastegate and silencer/muffler bypass.
I thought I'd share my initial thoughts:
PLUS points:
- Old muffler came off. Boy is it big and heavy! That side of the underside looks so clear now. Weight saving. And less heat from the exhaust box.
- Dansk s/s G-pipe cheap (£100), nicely made, and fitted easily.
- Idle/ tickover is a lovely sound. Maybe because my cat bypass is the Scart one with a dummy cat box as opposed to the straight pipe. The sound is very much like an old school Carrera- 100% perfect!
- Sound is really throaty all the way through the rev range. (No nasty resonance.)
- High revs is amazing, but not sure how much is down to my w/g pipe. Fantastic!
- Pops and burbles on lift off are most of the time. Very noticeable, not subtle like standard. Louder and deeper.
- The sound inside the car with windows up is really good. This is a massive difference. Again like my old Carrera :-)
MINUS points:
- I definitely have to turn my stereo up if I want to hear it. I now realise its not man enough and needs some upgrading = more expense!
- Pops on lift off are very noticeable and frequent. Not sure whether this will bother me later.
- One of the few criticisms I had of my 3.2 was that it was too noisy on long runs or if I was tired. I wonder if the turbo will be the same?
Don't yet know if I have flames, we'll see at night!
Can't tell whether the back pressure (lack of) affects the reponse, will have to do more spirited driving. What I have noticed is that due to the increased sound, it feels faster at lower speeds (if you know what i mean) which is no bad thing for the public roads. i.e. I can have fun more safely!
Early days yet but thought I'd let you know.
PS: Will take a sound recording as soon as I can....

Hi Mark,
I wondered how long that would take - sounds like you've finally got the "noise" that you wanted!
It was good seeing you last week, hopefully I'll see you at next month's meeting on the 3rd and you can demonstrate the full 965 "roar".
Cheers,
Tim.

Thanks all.
I drove into Watford today and the car sounded really mean in the traffic, and when I went into the multi-story car-park.. WOW!
Its definitely rather noisy and the pops on lift off are all the time and pretty loud. A bit annoying on slow driving but amazing when accelerate and then lift off, just like a race car!
PS: Miles, what happened with the police stopping you?

Yep, been there done that. I ran the tripple for a while, got stopped a few times. Twice by the same cop. He'd been pretty cool about the whole thing, and frankly only changed it because I got too much attention...

Great sound ! Mine has a Fabspeed cat by-pass and a stock muffler, it sound similiar to your clip, is your's a 3.3 or 3.6 turbo ? I am thinking of a G pipe but afraid it would be a little too annoying around town !!

eyeu,
mine is 3.3. The sound is with the G-pipe and the cat bypass. When on the move, the pops are more often, but not too loud. Its great all the time. The wastegate bypass is the best but only when turbo full boost.

If I understand it correctly, there are baffles in the small muffler after the wastegate [circled in red]. A bypass does away with that muffler and makes a bit more noise.

At last, here is a sound recording (&video) of the some revving with my new setup:

PS: Following John Mc's post explanation, I have now posted a pic of the new wastegate and you can see it's identical to the standard one, just no small cat/mini-muffler:
