Default Modified airbox for 965 query

I've read on the 964 forum that drilled holes, or modified airbox makes a nice sound on acceleration. I know that a few 965'ers here have done this. I'm wondering what is the verdict. Can you please describe the sound, and does anyone have a video/ sound recording.

Also, is there any downside to doing this?

Thanks in advance

I've thought about doing that for a while now too. I've never heard what it sounds like but I've always been concerned that it might affect the air intake temperature (i.e. may get higher) and also could affect the torque curve as my understanding is that intake pipes/manifolds are specifically.

Mind you if it sounded realy cool I'd definietly do it!

Try taking off the part that holds the air filter on & then tape the air filter element to the holder ?
Dry weather only...

This way you will get an idea.

Good response.

There has been a lot of discussion about this in the UK. General consenus seems that you can achieve the same result from adding a KN or BMC air filter rather than drilling holes.

You can also buy Carbon air boxes from people like fabspped, however its more for show than go IMHO.

I drilled the steel airbox cover on my 1994 Turbo 3.6.
No change in sound level at all with the paper or K&N air filter.

There was no sound level change.
I did not feel any power difference, but I didn't expect any.

I dont think it does much to the turbos..... probably that its forced induction anyway.

Still I think the best thing you can do is put a tube in there and hook it up the rear grill just like the new models... nice cool and dense air into your turbo vs the heated engine air you get

It would be great if someone made a pipe and mounting brackets to do that, as it looks like theres loads of space to attach beneath the rear grill to the right of the intercooler

Have you seen some of the 930's with the air inlets in the side rear windows
