Should I buy a 965?

Guys, sorry to barge in. I am exactly on the same situation. Test drove an awesome 3.3, perfect in every sense, coming with bumper to bumper warranty for a year. On top of that, it is sold by reliable people. The only thing I admit to being somewhat afraid is that I am goinfg to get a car with 17 years and 150 K kls... Supposing I keep it well and maintained..will it be around in a couple of years from now? Doesn't the material tear and wear even if only due to the passage of time?
Cheers

If the car has been well cared for and you maintain the same or better level over the next 20 years there is no reason why it shouldn't last.
I have 2 13 year old Porsches and both look and drive like they were new. Yes it takes work and some money to keep them this nice but once you own one it doesn't seem to matter as much.

I put @ 2500 miles a year on mine. I have spent considerably more money out of choice rather than necessity. My mods were done to enhance street driving without risking diveability/reliability. My car is phenomenally fast and will make a 996TT owner wonder why he spent all the extra coin! My mechanic feels it will easily match the new 997 TT. I get comments every time I drive it and despite being 15yrs old she still draws a crowd. How many '91 Corvettes do you even notice?

would buy a 3.6 turbo over a 3.3. i love the speedline wheels. in my opinion they are the best wheels ever made.

One more data point for your consideration of a 964 vs 965...
Last weekend, I had my 92 965 track car on track, and took an advanced student around during a run session. We had helmet communicators, and he was laughing in delight 4-6 times a lap. He's had a lot of prior track time, but couldn't stop laughing, he was having so much fun and enjoying the turbo experience for the first time.
When he crawled out of the car at the end of the session, he was still laughing and shaking his head.
But you probably wouldn't want that???
By the way, it's a high-mileage (116k miles), well maintained car. Its last 18k miles have been solely on the track. Very solid.

Maverick,
Thanks for the mods summary. Apart from the exhaust and spring (which I'll be doing in due course) , I guess the upgraded turbo makes the big difference? Does the flywheel improve things too?

For performance you have several ways to update it and maintain it on par with todays sports cars if you want to....
Nobody makes this kind of cars anylonger....I have found mine really bullet proof so far but of course as the years and track miles pile on something is bound to happen someday !

I did the flywheel first about 1 yr ago. Huge difference with the response of the engine. Lighter rotating mass therefore quicker response. Some people say it it makes it noisier and harder to drive which IMO is BS! Drivability is great and no discernable noise increase in the car. The Turbo change just makes more efficient use of the available power. Remember an engine is an air pump, the more efficiently you can get air in and out the more power you make.
