Have you tried any of the Amsoil, Redline, or Royal Purple gear oils? What do you like to run in your box?
I used the Redline and have about 800 miles on it with good results. It doesn't feel better or worse than what was previously used (PO had oil changed by dealer at 75,000 mile service and it doesn't state which oil was used). I've gotten a couple slightly notchy gear changes when moving out of second gear, but I'm not sure that's a fluid selection issue. If it gets worse, I will let you know, then change to Mobil (it's not a hard job and only takes 3.9 qts -- I think).
Paul, great post...very happy to see the manufacturer weigh in with truth data. Now, I'll definitely try Mobil 1 LS on the next gear oil change (should be no later than 2020 or 2021 I reckon!).
Paul, what were the symptoms of your failed Delvac experiment?
It has no slip agent so the diff wasn't slipping around corners. Big time noise, far more than the normal amount and the car didn't want to turn in since the diff wasn't doing it's job. Shifting was really nice but if you have a LSD you can't live with the diff being essentially locked up. The clutch plates in my diff are fairly new so they have the coating that the factory updated to in 1993 to reduce noise.

Thanks for the feedback...that definitely sounds like a failed experiment.
I have always been a fan of Swepco 201 and have used it successfully in my E30M3 (transmission) and in my 1972 911S; both for more than 20 years. I recently upgraded the '72 with the OS Giken LSD, so I reached out to the manufacturer to learn if I needed to add friction modifier and I was told not-necessary for my mild-street duty-cycle just straight up Swepco 201.
I would like to get some opinions for the 1994 965; mild-street operation.
The lsd clutch pack is working no matter the useage profile.
If there is no slip agent in the oil, you won't like how it behaves in your G50/52.
@Metal Guru I am thinking about using Swepco 201 and mix friction reducing agent. I am not sure about the ratio. Perhaps just a 4 or 8 Oz bottle?
Explanation: I am trying really hard to develop some sort of a standard across all the cars that I maintain. And I pretty much maintain all my vehicles. So I have standardized on coolants, Dot 4 brake fluids. I have done it on the torque converter automatics, the AMTs, and the Tremec manuals, and some of the rear diffs. This is why I am trying to reuse what I already have on the shelf versus buying another fluid…

I guess that you will have to experiment with how much slip agent to add. If it doesn't work out, Redline 75w90 or Mobil 1 75w90 are good alternatives should you need them.
I remember filling my old SC transaxle with Swepco. Stuff smelled nasty but then again I wasn't planning on wearing it like after shave.
Certainly having a fleet of fun cars to maintain is a nice problem to have.

Thanks for the reply, Paul. 35 years in my business around heavy trucks, little trucks, fork-lifts, always hands-on, it is impossible to not stay engaged...
As it turns out, I have 5 X 1 Gallons of Swepco 201, 10 X 1qt. of Mobil 75W/90LS, and 6 x 7 Oz. of Trans-X friction modifier.
--> My secret spaghetti sauce that I am sharing with you guys: I mix 7 Oz. of Trans-X friction modifier with Swepco 201. The Mobil 75W/90LS is OK, and what I am using on a couple of US cars, and it seems to work well for them.
Since you guys like pictures; it was barely above freezing, and I went ahead, and steam cleaned/power washed the transmission. Then drained/filled and will detail (off) the cosmoline before I attach to the engine for the reinstallation. Mind you, split the case and went through everything. It only took a year!
After letting my clutch out I'm getting gear rattle in my 93 964 with a RS light weight clutch. No limited slip in that trans Redline 75w 90 gear oil used. It's not a big deal. Super low miles on the trans and car has 50k miles.
I'll order Mobil 75W/90LS for the 1991 965 G50.52 with 20/100.
I also need to order break in oil and consult with my engine builder on the Engine oil. It's been 13 years since my last turbo.
Thanks Paul and everyone for this thread.
Is the Mobil 75W/90 LS oil different to the Devlac
I changed my oil a few years ago, not done many miles, but as soon as I changed it, I had serious clunking when reversing around corners, I think I used Mobil 1 75/90 Syn is this different to the LS
How many litres is needed
