Has anyone ever noticed light smoke coming from under the wheel arches after a long run. Always suspected oil leaks burning on hot engine but never really found.
In addition last week i got stuck for about an hour in some very heavy traffic which was just stop start crawl. Again noticed small amounts of smoke from engine area coming from wheel arches. Temp gauge was just about to go into the RED so i parked car and left for 1/2 hour while traffic calmed down. Seemed OK later that day. Day was hot at about 25C.
How is temperature regulated on our cars as air cooled if in still traffic.

sounds like you do have engine leaks that are dripping onto the headers... can be a pain to find... try wiping down or cleaning the engine and run it then have a look. reach behind the air box at the back of the engine if you can and feel for any oil there- could be the sensor leaking....
You are overheating probably because your fan for the oil cooler is not coming on.... our cars should not overheat in UK weather! when its hot (over half way mark) check front right wing and listen for the fan, check fuses as well. i had the same problem once and discovered there was actually no fan there!
Good luck on the leaks

First 25C is not that hot and even stationary, your engine should not be running that hot.
So check the fan at the oil coolerand check the fans in the rear wheel arches that should activate at higher engine temps. Many of us have installed auxillary oil coolers - its a pain but a lot cheaper than a new engine.
