Default Curious??

Guys,

I was having dinner with 2 good Porsche friends today. One drives a 700++ 996TT souped up by Imagine Auto and boy does his car rock and roll, you can hear it comming from far and my other good friend who drives a MK2 GT3.

Anyway I was telling them that the 930 does share a few common engine internals as the 996TT and they disagreed with me. Please correct me becase I think I did read in some thread of the similar engine parts between the 930 and 996TT. If yes, which parts do they share??

Thanks.

Sameer,

I do believe they share some parts, the main one here would be the crankcase (bottom end). How? 930 crankcase involve into 964 crankcase --> improved to 993 (crankcase, including GT2, GT1) --> and on to 996 Turbo, and GT3 too. If you look under the GT3 you will see the crankcase number.

That is all I remember.

Regards,

Sonny

Sonny,
Did some reading up. The GT3 uses the same crank as the 930 only that the GT3 is a 76.4mm crank.

Sameer you are incorrect.. The 996TT would be closest to the 993TT, if one wanted to try to tie something together. The rotating assy in the 996TT is all 993TT. The 996TT uses the 964 case casting, and 964 oil pump. Porsche has later installed the dual pickup GT3 pump in the GT2 and X50's. Saying that uses the same crank is also incorrect (sorry).. It is similar only that it has a fully counter-weighted design like the 930 crank. But all the measurements are different. The nose, and the rod journals are smaller, and it is stroked to 964 specs.. The overall casting is cleaner..

I went through the PET to see if there were any 964 prefixed part numbers in the 996TT engine. I found one, a gasket around a oil cooler. In fact, I found three 944 parts (pins) in the same engine.
