Yes, it is just a top end and not a full rebuild.

If you don't measure the cylinders for roundness as they tend to oval at higher miles and hone the cylinders when replacing the rings they will never seat correctly and cause premature failure. The crosshatches created by honing help to retain oil on the cylinder wall to help with lubricating the rings. This is basic engine building 101.

This is a cylinder I had reconditioned with fresh Nikasil and diamond honed. Hard to see the marks but they are there.

FYI the factory actually used Goetze rings .

The rings need to be measured and cut using a special machine which will give a precise cut of the ring and gap needed. The gap can vary based on application.

Yeah, but I don’t see how honing, rings, all that has much to do with the valve clearance, unless you’ll are suggesting that these little things are clues that add up to questionable results.

Usually while in there,.. inspect everything.
Intake blocks, Fuel lines, wires and Cap, electrical connections. Make sure your mounting points are not stripped.

Yes my point is they are overlooking the most basic steps and if they overlooked something as important and simple as honing the cylinders what other corners were cut that could have lead to the damage? If they try to drop this additional bill on you I wouldn't be happy.

New cylinders were used as well when the pistons were replaced. Guess the remaining question is whether they honed the cylinder walls before installation.
