I am in the market for a 964 turbo. I am willing to spend between 35 and 40k (which probably limits me to the 3.3). What is the maximum mileage that you would consider for these vehicles? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Buying a 1991/1992 Turbo isn't easy as they are very hard to come by and when they do,you will notice most of them have relatively higher miles > 60,000.To get a nice low mileage ( < 35K ) with documented service history,in pristine condition, you would have to cough up more than $45,000.
Make sure when you do find one,get a PPI done at a reputable Porsche dealer/independent shop along with a compression and a leakdown test.
If you like white color with metador interior check couple of posts below as one of the members here is selling his pristine 1992 for around $49,000.
Goodluck in your search, you won't be disappointed.

I don't think there is a maximum mileage - your choice should be based on the service history and, as Yasir points out, the results of the PPI. I would be perfectly comfortable buying a higher mileage car that had the right kind of maintenance and upgrades and passed the compression and leakdown test.

I would say a PPI is the most important aspect when buying any older porsche, and with the turbocharged cars its even more important, there are just more things that can go wrong, and many of these cars have had abusive owerns.
Each car will have its own unique history, and in the end the price of these cars is really hard to judge, there are so few of them on the market that in a way each is a collectors item. This is why i'll try to keep my family Oak Green Metalic 965 in the family as long as I can, it may have 90k on the clock but it has documentation back to the day it was picked up from the dealer back in 1992, and it just keeps getting better with age..... (mainly because anything worn out is getting upgraded).

That love afair didn't last very long. How long did you have her 5 months. I thought you were trashing all the 996TT's with the 965.

The 965 is faster than most 996 turbo and I do love her, But The company needs a 996 turbo to do some more developement with hear in the states.
I also need to have a show car of our own. for some photo shoots.
Its not my choice but the boss in Germay says go buy a 996 turbo.
If I can sell my harley or benz I will keep the 965.
cheers
