Default Need new tires

What do you all recommend? I have 18's and I don't drive it in winter months so performance tires be good unless until there's a version that's good all around?

Thanks

I recently put the new Michelin PS4S's on my boxster. Fantastic tire better than the PS2 and the PS SS. Great in wet and dry but useless in the cold.

Ah.
I'm on my 2nd set of Sumitomos. At X-way speeds they are loud.
Can you elaborate?

PS4S's don't come in 285/30/18 so I would either have to go with Michelin Pilot sport 2's or Bridgetone Pole positions, any recommendations?

Most shops will just do a static balance which will take care of any imbalance and eliminate any shimmy. Some shops offer road balancing which measure the force variation and runout of the whole tire and wheel assembly. It is usually an extra charge. Just noticed a number of these that would not balance properly when road force balanced and had to return them for replacements. Could cause vibrations that could be the cause of the noise or they could just be a loud tire.

I love my pole positions. I'm on my 3rd set over 14 yrs. I started out using SO2's,.. and now on SO4's.

Admittedly I started out on those because my COA shows that they came stock from the factory back in '91. But I've never felt uneasy pushing the car on them.

Having said that, fresh tires beat ANY older tires from any manufacturer. Plenty of tread, non-dried out rubber can make the biggest difference. So when I say that I was on the Rattler (twisty mtn road outside Ashville NC on a Treffen) and they performed very well for dtriving to hit 80% of the limits of the car (I'm being hard on myself,... cuz when I'm driving like that I feel like I'm at 100% of my own driving skill limits),...

Anyway,... I like the wear ratings on the Bridgestone Pole Position SO4's too,.. and when you heat them up, for me they perform well. And the prices are much more tolerable than the Michelin Lattitude Sports that I run on my Cayenne Turbo at close to $470 EACH!!!

So I throw my vote towards those.

I actually had mine balanced at Roush on their road load balancer. Same principal as you mentioned.
They balanced up without a lot of weight required but my wheels have a fair amount of radial runout.
As good as the RH Speedline replicas look, sometimes I wish I had cast wheels.

I have the S04's on the 997T and they are a great all around tyre. I have Nitto NT01's on the 964T as I don't drive her in the rain and they are awesome dry weather tyres with amazing grip..... But are essentially slicks. Had the PS4's on the M5 and they are probably the best tire I've run...great wet and dry traction, great tread wear, quiet.

Paul,

3 piece wheels have slight movement in all parts. Wheels that I restore are checked for straight/true and round when I receive a set and it ensures no hop or wobbles on the inner and outer rims as well as the centers. If needed the wheels not passing this initial inspection are trued and the imperfections are straightened and verified straight. I then mark the wheels as they were trued and I then restore the parts and upon reassembly the wheel components are kept and assembled again as marked and they are verified and trued on assembly. This last step occurs as the bolts are tightened - the wheels are spun and checked as the bolts are in a star pattern tightened. Some of the early RH parts were thin and went out of round depending on the pot holes and other road conditions encountered while driving. I remember you built a jig to assist assembly of your set, but that still does not mean everything is running straight/true and round.

Pauls set running 10,75" rear and that is 2,25" outer rim and a Speedline 993 RS 8,5" rear inner rim barely fits. jdorociak@gmail.com Jim

I'm late to this thread but one more vote for Sumitomo's. Had them on my DD 996 for a decade with no issues. On my 964t though, Michelin PS since I never drive the car they just get old and need replacing........
