PSA - rear valve stems
Guys-
Just a quick PSA - If you run Speedlines or another rim where the valve stem does not mount close to horizontal - either use the valve stem supports or full metal stems - if you drive the car at higher speeds. The fronts look to be fine - it's the rears you need to support.
I thought the stem supports were gimmicky. They are not! I had removed the supports a year or so ago I think because one was coming loose. Figured no need to reinstall.
Did a 450 mile drive about a week ago - all through northwest Colorado - very fun roads. Well about 80-100 miles from home my rear stem split due to stress created from centrifugal force. I had a compressor. And we had e-tape - by taping the stem to the inner lip of the wheel so it was pulled inward we almost eliminated the leak - lost 6 psi during the hour plus drive to my buddy's house - he has tire machines so we put in a valve stem. I was very surprised it held, frankly, but we kept speeds under 70 and it did.
Lesson learned. I've reinstalled them and looking forward to Rennsport road trip in Sept. Just a few small things to address, like the AC, which is in progress.

I include metal stems on all sets I restore and have done so for the last 12 years. No issues reported. jim jdorociak@gmail.com
