For that kind of money you need to fix the checkstrap and reupholster the seats. Those are big ugly items that are going to make people wonder about other things that might have been neglected. I wouldn't have listed the car without taking care of those items if I were looking for top dollar. If you want a reasonably quick sell, I would shoot for low to mid forties.
I also wonder how this car is quicker than your 993 C2S which has more power and better gearing? Was this 964 enhanced during the engine rebuild, or are your 993's valve guides completely toast?

June 2017 seems to have brought out all crazies with their super ambitious 964 asking prices. They appear to have jumped up by $20-30k in a matter of weeks.

I would advise you to ignore all comments and list the car on Bring A Trailer.

...I purchased this car for my dad to replace an 84 911 that was getting a bit too hard to drive. My dad is 75 and is starting to want a softer drive so I am picking up a 2014 Cayman S for him and the Garage is too full to keep this great car...
My father-in-law, similar age, just came home with a sweet Audi S4 (with black wheels and an after-market exhaust). Really surprised that my mother-in-law likes the car too, especially since it's a bit loud, but she giggled when she said it sounds so good. I love the feeling you get from a car that you connect with.

There have been a few 964's (C4's) auctioned on BAT recently, I'd review auction results to get a better idea of market. Pricing one correctly is tough but you'll be able to judge where you are relative to market by level of inquiries.

I wouldn't have lowered the price. Just make it clear you're open to offers and see what's the most money someone will throw out there.
All you need is one sucker who reads too much Petrolicious and follows Magnus Walker on instagram to overpay. There's lots of them out there, buying into the trend, "adding an air-cooled to the garage" of six-figure under warranty cars after watching too many Singer videos on YouTube. How else would these cars have appreciated from mid-teens to $60-80k in only a few years.
With the exception of a couple outliers, I think BAT is fairly low on the money the car's bring. Lots of "Did not meet reserve" auctions from ambitious sellers. Probably because that's what they're actually worth in the mainstream (i.e. when you're not looking at the listings through fanboi goggles, which is what happens a lot on the dedicated Porsche and air-cooled sites).

Great advice. Dropping the price from $50k to $40k is too drastic and I think you could be leaving money on the table. I also agree with Vandit, it seems like 964 prices have jumped significantly in the last few months so if you're not in a hurry to sell you might as well start high.
