'nother vote for the velvet. It's a really nice color AND it's original so that's 2 pluses going for it. Next would be a blue, green...anything but black, white, grey...or guards red. No offense to anyone with those colors (including me).
I have a metallic slate grey project car ( original color) wish it was Velvet Red - great color and not very common but if it doesn't float your boat, paint it what you want.
So, I voted to "paint something like maritime", but after seeing your car, I need to amend. I have to vote strongly for keeping Velvet Red. That is a really good color for he 964 and as a factory original, a rather rare color. I love it.
If you want another color, I'd sell yours and buy a more common 964 color to repaint. This said, don't think you can make a bad decision.
Do whatever you want. You have to live with it. It is not as much that the color was changed but whether or not it was done properly. A full color change should be just that. If you don't remove everything and respray it all IMO it will always negatively impact the value. If everything matches and it is a quality paint job who will know the difference when looking at it unless you tell them.
With that said it is already a very nice and rare color. A fresh coat of VR will pop a lot more than it did and could be stunning. It will also cost you considerably less to do properly.
That VR color is boring as hell compared to other paint colors available given you do not care about re-sale. Sure if paint was great keep it, or if you were so concerned about resale maybe, and in the general sense its neat compared to all the regular red and black cars we see...... Sounds like you care less about resale and want to get back to enjoying air coolers vs watching the market for what they are worth? To me that's refreshing as hell. (heading down the same path as you with an air cooled car in PPI and if passes gonna mod it and have fun) These cars need to stop being the focus of resale and more focus on making the car how you like it!
IMO if you plan to mod the car then paint it what ever you like and if done well will be worth as much as the stock color. A modded 964 with over 100K miles in a bad *** highly desirable color (with a paint job done well) is worth the same or more then a modded 964 with over 100K miles in the stock color re-spray.... Some of the darker greys, fashion grey.... Gulf blue....others? Change the color!!!
Alright so after many sleepness nights, tossing and turning over color. I am going ahead with my boy Magnus Walker's 964 slate grey.
Can anyone advise where I can source the chrome trim pieces around door/windows?
Can anyone confirm where i can source the chrome trim shown on this beautiful grey/black
Early 911 parts. The front windshield was replaced using one from an older 911 most likely a 3.2 1986 or so. You will need to check the PET to figure out which one came with the radio antenna built in. The 3.2's switched to the 964 style seal in 88 or 89 IIRC. You will need to 3.2 seal and trim from a pre 78 911. Same goes for the rear
The rest can be stripped and plated or you can buy from the Porsche for big $$. There is a place we used in CA a while back to chrome some of these parts IIRC it cost around $1300 or so to have done. I will see if I can find the name of the place but it did take some time.
