This is the front/drivers side engine tin (#5 in the diagram). Not looking very salvageable as you can see. Interestingly the adjacent passenger side is in perfect shape.
Are my options...
1. Pay the $300 for the Dansk tin....ouch.
2. Check the various dismantlers for a decent used tin
3. Try and tack weld the missing piece using an outline w/aluminum?
Any solutions welcome....
If you have a template, you can weld on the missing part. Looks pretty destroyed though. May just be easier to buy a new piece. Try DC Auto to see if they may have a replacement. My experience with dismantlers is that they tend to be almost as expensive as new (except for DC). Mine had a bit less corrosion than that, so I did weld on a small part.
It's $275 shipped from Sonnon Porsche or eBay from Germany (about the same).
I'll take a look at what ya got. Not looking for perfection, just coverage so used works.
Call Rick at Weekend Rides in Pa. He's got a bunch of it laying around. Will give you a good deal. He has parted out multiple 964's and is somewhat of a specialist in them. Great guy too. Tell him that Hunter sent you!
Hello, i am in a similar position with rotten front engine tins.
Can these tins be removed with the engine installed?
To the original poster-has your engine been removed?
Thanks in advance
Front tins require engine to be out. All the others can be done easily w engine in.
Front tin, passenger side (on a US car) can come out with the engine in place but dropped a few inches. I had no success with the driver side, engine has to come out. I'll let you guess which one was the worst, of alllll tins on my car
Hello, just thought I would add that I managed to remove drivers side US, with engine installed. As you correctly say dropped engine a few inches. Next will be to attempt the power steering pump side!
I'll need to trace out the missing remains & line up with the engine curve (using pictures as well). This piece is not visible so just looking for coverage & once painted should look fine.
Love a good homemade solution, nice tip Bo.
